Economics/Finance Honors program at McGill

Can anybody give me insight into the economics/finance program at McGill? I keep hearing things like its a slacker program, its doesnt have a good reputation et etc...
I have always wanted to go to McGill for the city/environment/french culture (Im french so would be paying quebec resident prices). However I dont want to go there if I'm not going to get a good education in my chosen field and will be limited in my choices later because of a negative label on this program at McGill. I currently live in Atlanta GA, and my alternative is Ga Tech (good business school here in Atlanta, not really known very well though and too technology based for me).
Thanks for any help you can give me!

I think Mcgill would be a good choice for you, espeically if you are a canadian citizen. Personally I’m giving up Georgetown MSB and Notre Dame Mendoza to go to mcgill, i mean the business program in Mcgill is definitely lacking but if you are looking for the graduate placement, i heard it’s great.

and bump…I’m trying to figure out the Honors program as well. is it harder than regular and is it worth the time and effort?

how can you possibly slack in an honor program?!

sorry no the slacking was more in reference to the business school itself. the honors econ/finance is incredibly hard supposedly.

honours econ at mcgill is similar to the econ at very top universities, according to grad school adcoms. Thus, it will be incredibly difficult for the average kid admitted to McGill, i.e. imagine if you had to take math classes with kids at MIT. As a result, ~60% of the kids don’t make it through the first year of honours econ. Again, this is partly because McGill is not very selective depending on where you apply from, particularly for arts.

Thanks for that info wutang. I’m not too worried about the math section, i currently have straight 7/7 in IB Math HL. However I am worried about perceptions from outside the university that may look down on economics and finance at McGill. I’ve read your posts in “Don’t go to McGill if…” and you seem to suggest that these are not strong programs at McGill?

bump to get information!

2nd bump!

If anyone here has dropped out of the program…how exactly does that work out? Is it easy to move to a finance major/econ minor from it?

3rd bump!

Does anyone know about this program?
