I was looking at SCUs honors program and it looks good on paper. Anyone with experience?

My H was just asking about that. My D was not offered this. I seem to remember maybe one in 5 kids admitted with distinction are invited to the honors program.

what are the requirements to be admitted with distinction?

I've never seen any specific criteria.

I believe that the admitted "with distinction" designation is given to something like the top 15 - 20%. I don't recall exactly where I got that fact, but I think it might have been said by one of the admissions officers at an info session.

The SCU website says that only 25 - 30% of those admitted with distinction would qualify for the University Honors Program so you're talking about the top 5%.

I think I've seen that as well... not sure how they define "top" though.

I'm currently only a freshman in the honors program, but the requirements are pretty extensive.

Every honors program student is required to take English 1H and 2H (regardless of whether you took it in high school), and Honors 11, 12, 13, a survey of literature from different eras.

Along with the honors program comes early registration and a small scholarship. Early registration is VERY useful. You can register for teachers and times without worrying about classes getting full.

So are full classes often an issue?

Hi Shrinkrap ^^ I don't think he meant "full" as in you can't get your classes. I think he meant full in that the best time slot and professor for an entry level class may be full. There may be 5 sections of frosh bio for example but the Tu/Th 10:00 is likely to fill before the MWF 8:30. I may be wrong but the impression I got at SCU was that small class size as well as ease of scheduling were two of the things that brought so much student satisfaction.

Well that sounds good, thanks!

claremontguy, I just got an Honors Program invitation and I have some questions: is the small scholarship automatic, or do only some students in the honors program get it? When do you find out? And... um... how small is "small?" How competative is the junior year Oxford scholarship? Any info is appreciated!
