So I’m kind of confused about the various programs in colleges. If one applies to an honors/advanced program, and gets rejected, does that mean they will be rejected from the school as well? Or can one get rejected from an honors program but still be accepted into the college? Thanks and sorry if my question is kind of confusing.
I know of a student who was accepted at Univ. of Wash. but was rejected for the honors program. I think the university acceptance came first and the honors program rejection came later.
Assuming you’re already accepted into the school, I can’t imagine any situation where not getting into the Honors program would cause the school to rescind your acceptance.
The honors program in colleges are considered added “bonuses” to attending the school, by offering more advanced and challenging courses to those eligible to make the most of their education (plus the appeal of being called an “honors” student). Honors decisions are usually made after college acceptances (after analyzing the strength of the accepted student pool), and have no effect on the student’s acceptance status to the college. The college will in no way look down upon you if you are not accepted into the honors program, it just instead serves as a platform to recognize high-achieving incoming students!
The answer is it depends. If the school without the honors program is a safety for you, and you specifically apply to the honors program, then if they decide against you for honors they may decide to yield protect because they assume you will not come without honors. However, if honors decisions are made later then it should not matter.
I pondered whether it would happen to me with Northwestern because I was rejected from HPME.
It did not, as I was accepted.
