Honors RAP

Hey guys,

I've been admitted to the Honors college, and I'm wondering what the Honrors RAP is. The website is very vague. I read about it on CC; some people are saying they don't want to do it because they'll be "segregated" from the rest of the campus. What does this mean?

Thanks!

Honors College has a separate residential area. It is one a few areas. Basically, you take your RAP classes (7 credits I believe) in your residential area. Actually, the CHC residential area is closer to the rec center, library and student center. And the dorms at CHC are the newest on campus.

I could be wrong but what I think people mean when they say they will be segregated is that they won’t be in the Southwest residential area which is considered party-central at UMass.

I’m a current student in a RAP. That being said, RAPs are residential academic programs. Their main goal is to gather students who have similar interests and let them live with each other (the residential aspect). Additionally, people within a RAP all take a certain class geared around the topic of interest (the academic aspect). You basically take a class relating to the topic of your RAP and a 4 credit honors seminar with all your fellow “RAPpers.” Since you were accepted into the honors college, there are honors only RAPs that you can join that exist within the new Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community. In all, RAPs are really helpful in establishing close relationships with your floor mates, and they also help you find people with your interests. The “Segregation” you probably heard of refers to the Honors Residential Area being segregated in the sense that “smart people” are secluded from the rest of the “general population” of the campus. Even if you don’t join a rap in the honors residential area you can still live there. I live in one of the freshman dorm in the CHCRC and it’s amazing. Hope this helped :)

Thanks so much @geo1113 and @beng233 !
So do I need to sign up for any of these RAPs? Or is that later, when I’m admitted?

After you are admitted. There will be a signup. Here is the link.

So I should do it AFTER I submit the SIR, correct?
How does it usually work? Do you take part in a RAP that you’re just interested in, or do you take part in one that’s related to your major (or something like that?)

They don’t have to relate to your major at all. There are a few general topics they offer: Philosophy, Creativity, Health Science, Nursing, Science & Math, Engineering (These are some of the honors ones. There are non honors ones as well)

What is SIR?
