I know I was admitted to the honors program at UMD CP and I just received the letter that told me to decide what program I would like to try to be in by the 28th or the option to opt out.

I know there are positives of the honors school: smaller classes, better teachers, more opportunities

But what are the negatives. I kind of don't want to be overloaded with work while trying to balance out my studies and having a good time

There’s no negatives to the honors program.

All honors programs can be “given a shot” - if you think it’s too much work, then you don’t have to continue for the next semester. Though, I doubt you will find it to be too much work…

Some factors may cause you to decide it’s not worth it, it’s not for you, etc. but there is just absolutely no reason to not try it or a semester or two, really.

You can just do basic University Honors–it’s only 5 classes, and you have all four years to get it done. If you never get the citation, they won’t really bother you about it, and you still get all the opportunities while you’re at the University.

There aren’t really any negatives to Honors. If you do Gems you’ll have a substantial amount of work, but depending on the project it could look REALLY good on a job/grad school application, and you’ll learn a lot about research if you’re into that.
