Currently, I'm in the process of transferring from a local community college. I am not 100% sure what a "hook" is but I am wondering if being a non traditional student counts. Or if being a convicted felon could count as being a hook. I have a 4.0 and I just want to obtain my bachelors, community college is my stepping stone. With my ECs and GPA I believe i can be admitted at a top 20 university or an elite LAC, but at the same time I think being 24 years old and a felon (drug possession) could hurt my chances of being accepted anywhere let alone a highly selective institution. Is there a chance I could use my experiences to my advantage and actually get into my dream school?

A convicted felon is usually an “unhook”, meaning that it’s harder for the student to get into a school. If you can write something about how it changed your life in the “If you chose yes, state why.” section, then maybe it won’t hurt as bad; but, it’s not a hook.

Did you start a non profit organization that has reduced drug usage in your neighborhood? If not then it’s not a hook.

It’s not what’s traditionally considered a “hook” in college admissions.

It comes under the category of life experience. And, it can potentially go both ways, however you spin it.

I went to a really good college, and knew a guy who was a college athlete who had been through rehab as a high school student but who was a genius. He got in, but on the other hand, none of us have ever heard from him again. It is a risky proposition.

Lol, hey I appreciate the sincerity. I was really expecting the worst starting this forum but I can take the thread being moved. If I play the diversity card in one of my essays I feel like I might have a shot. As far as a hook? None yet lol

Apply to Reed! We take convicted felons.

Really? I took a glance at Reed. Not sure if they had the financial aid I am looking for in a school but I’ll look into it

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t a drug conviction disqualify you for federal financial aid?

Sorry LadyScholar86 you are wrong. I’m not getting into the specifics of anything in that regard though so maybe you should do your own research on that to find the facts for yourself lol.

@LadyScholar86 I believe felons can get grants but that may be it…

Lol ok… just to clear the air. If you are convicted for drugs WHILE receiving financial aid you are disqualified for a period of time.

Sorry dude, I’m just going by what I saw on the financial aid page.
