Hooks for Int'ls

I have no hooks. I am an average applicant. I don't even have a good school transcript (straight B's in year10!) :( maybe my hook is sports? I participate in heaps of sports and gotten the sportswoman award nearly every year since year 6. But I am pretty sure that that will be waived off by an another applicant such as callthecops.. who owns a company!

axfr, pton likes well rounded people ;)

NoFX, dont worry, ur probably gonna beat me to it. they might look at my SAT score of 1350 and say "bleh...whos gonna waste money on sending this idiot who dared apply to my uni a reject letter??"

I just hope that doesnt happen....

astrix - whats ur hook?

haha i wish i had one

My hook = I am malleable ( lets see how many peopel get that ;) )

Not as impressive as owning a company though ^_^ ( cool man )

elodie,
actually the books on third culture kids are not at all like you describe. they talk about the unique challenges as well as the advantages of a mobile childhood and adolescence. perhaps you would like to read the book by David Pollock before you blow it all off. you might learn something about yourself...

I did a thesis on TCKs on whether they were moving towards global citizenship, sending surveys to int'l schools around the world, i found that they wernt...

elodie,

1350 too. Yeah.

Gosh.

paradox..thts not even "bad" reallly !! i have the sat on the 22nd...:s

k, ill try to find one and ill read it.. it cant hurt can it? what i was trying to say was that these books seem so distant and hard to relate to (the ones iv read at least) but o well ill read david pollock

elodie,
I agree- the books kind of make it sound like every expat kid is the same, and of course they are not, and they are not always "reader friendly"- check Amazon for other options on the topic(there was a new book out last year but I forget the title), but don't think you are alone....
are you at an international school? talk with your counselor...they should have some good articles about this...my kids now have friends all over the planet after 12 years overseas..I can see that it is "different" for them as they think of going to the US for college, but they will be fine, and it helps to know what they might expect...as for missing friends, you have my sympathy, really- it is tough.

If you are interested in film, by the way, I know a boy at Bard who grew up overseas and has loved it there...

special...the word scares me...
i didn't do anything incredible
i play the saxophone at a high level in the conservatory in my home city
i passed board examinations for chamber music, jazz, musical theory, ear training and scored A. Those are kind of regional/national recognitions. I play in a quartet, the conservatory's first orchestra and several other bands. And last summer, i performed in some concerts with some professional musicians, in France and Germany

that's a lot of dedication to music. i'm sure it shines through axfr... dont worry about it

thats sweet axfr...thats far more impressive than most of our hooks...esp. mine!

Anybody else? there are so many int'ls here...u guys have GOTTA have something special!

call the cops-are you kidding? your hook is great! im sure thousands of applicants do music, but starting a company...that's something that really makes you stand out!

Hey,
I dunno if i really can call any of these facts a "hook", but here they come:

-I founded (with two other students) a MUN club and participated with our own delegation in the BRIMUN 2004 conference (International U of Bremen MUN conference)
-I'm a second generation immigrant (Germany, parents come from Romania)
-fluent in German, English, Romanian, French

BTW i applied to Penn, Georgetown, Dartmouth, JHU and Notre Dame

Hey i also founded an MUN club, it was in my junior year...we went to SEOMUN (seoul-how boring, i know)...thats pretty cool to have it in a uni.

cool!
what do you mean "to have it in a uni.?"
you mean MUN? or listing this on an app.?

i also founded our MUN club...this year actually..as a jounior...we are going to THIMUN though YEY ( two weeks to go) i think thats a good hook..shows leadership..MAYBE?

what's a mun club,??
