Hooks : What hooks do you have? How important are they?

Fred:

I assure you, the first kid is a real kid. I know him well.

Kowloon:

I believe that in on-camera work, the terms are "lead," "principal," "featured," and "extra." As I recall, he was a lead in one commercial and principal in the other.

Don't know how good the hooks are if they don't relate to what you'll be doing in school, though. The acting stuff---wouldn't that only be good if you were applying to a performing arts program? Or is it good to show long-term dedication or something?

Actually, getting in to a competitive performing arts program is almost always by audition, so past experience counts for little except how good an actor it makes you. I'd say that it becomes more useful for applying to a school that has a theater department and needs talent to fill it, but isn't a competitive, audition-type program. The same can be said of good musicians, because the college's symphony, band, etc. need good musicians, but a really top-notch, audition-in conservatory will have all the musicians it needs.

Here's a sort of expired hook...When my daughter was a baby, a relative was holding her on campus of college when college president walked by, admired baby and said "She's so cute, I'm going to give her a full scholarship." Relative decided to do us a favor and wrote to college president asking him to put that hin writing. And he did, sort of, I have a signed letter from him with my daughter's name on it saying he'll admit her and give her a full scholarship IF he's still president in 16 years. Of course, he isn't president anymore...but she just expressed interest in this college and I want to figure out if this letter means anything or is it just one more extraneous paper that the admissions office doesn't want to see?

is being a state elected official considered a hook

also if i started a computer repair/building web design business would that be a hook. i put it on my application but i couldnt write an essay on it because of my other ec's

nmehta4: Are the youth governors of the other 49 states applying to the same places you are?

not all, i applied ED to duke and i kno of one other person doing so

Interesting fact Muffy, but I doubt it'd be considered a hook (what's in a casual recognization of a cute baby? :S)

wow thats sketch, its probably good he isnt president anymore

Muffy:

I think that's a charming letter. I'd definitely send it, but as a humorous aside.

She could start her essay "I was accepted to ____ at the age of two..." [good lead-in, no?] That's the only idea I had for getting the letter in.

that would be a very good lead in i think lol

Ok... lets stick to the topic -_- or else some mod should close this thread

Kowloon, I don't think those are hooks... I'm sure lots of applicants, myself included, have lived in many places throughout their lives. I also speak Spanish English and Korean fluently. So...even just here in CC, your hook isn't really that big of a hook. If you were Hispanic though, I guess that would be a hook..

URM - Hispanic, 1st generation, Bilingual, Perfect attendence K-12,
Unique Major, and I met the assistant director of admissions and keep in contact with him. Are those hooks?

My Hook:

A Major National Officer in the high school branch Democratic Party of the United States, have organized many events and etc. Hopefully advancing even more next year?

I'm not sure what consensus people have come to about whether URM is a hook, although it's definitely a big boost, as is 1st gen. Bilingual is not a hook, and nor is perfect attendance, IMO.

I think people don't realize how rare hooks are. Most of you who are asking "Is this a hook" have tips, not hooks.

being an athlete is not that rare, so i dont know that i would consider hooks to be very rare. i think being a URM/Legacy/Recruit are all considered big hooks, lets face it, these people get huge advantages. as for other extra-currics as hooks, that is not us for to decide i've realized. its what looks unique among all the other applicants. but i wouldnt characterize a hook as very rare, i know tons and tons of people that are either a urm/legacy or recruit, its not that out of the odinary

how about living on a farm? is that a hook?

no, whats so special about that
