I recently visited the Johns Hopkins campus and I love it. Like wow, when I think college the Hopkins campus stands out as the zenith of my expectations. BUT i hear Hopkins kids are just a little intense and very grade conscious (uncomfortably so)......My question thus is does anyone know of anyother schools of about the same academic level and selectivness that have a similar campus. Like has anyone who has visited Hopkins visited anyother schols that have a similar campus.

I think that a lot of the Southern schools have great campuses. I loved Mary Washington, James Madison, Rhodes. Check out Wake Forest, Davidson. Wiliam and Mary is a favorite.

anything like liberal arts?

Try to visit when school it is in session and sit down with students and chat with them - you'll most likely learn a lot about the school. There are many myth's out there and the overall reputation of the student body is most definitely one of them.

Hopkins students tend to be serious and therefore care about grades. For the most part, they are not grade obsessed. The rumors/myths about this stem largely from the fact that there are a lot of pre-meds at Hopkins and pre-meds everywhere are more grade obsessed than most students. Outside of pre-meds, the emphasis on grades is no greater than other comparable schools. And even most pre-meds aren't really obsessed--but they certainly care.

idk my information comes from two none pre-med to either wanted to or are transferring because of the atmosphere..

check out Emory. Emory and Hopkins were my 2 favorite campuses, both very beautiful.

my hopkins roommate who is supposedly a BME and taking 7 intensive courses plays 4 hours of games everyday, plus another 30 minutes of the simpsons, plus another 30 minutes of family guy...

The campus appears to resemble that of Elon University, in North Carolina, but when considering admissions and academics, Johns Hopkins is far more prestigious.

If you are ruling out JHU because of opinions about students being cut-throat and overly competitive, than I think you are making a mistake ... especially if you loved the campus. As has been said over and over again on CC and the Hopkins Forums, those opinions are myths. Read this for more detail:
- Hopkins Forums -> Competition: Does it exist?
- Hopkins Forums -> Cuthroat opinion?

And also heed the advice of a few on this thread, visit when classes are in session and speak with current JHU students. Get opinions from students who have been at Hopkins in the past 4-5 years ... things are a lot different than in the past.

I go to Hopkins, I'm not pre-med but I am an engineer and I would definitely say that Hopkins is not destructively cut throat. The fact is that if you are a Hopkins student, you are an intelligent and driven person, so you wish to do well in your courses, but that does not mean that you are extremely cut throat. For the majority of my classes, I was working/studying with other students. This is very common, in our library, the levels that are normally the most crowded are the first two, which are primarily group study.

Yes there are students that don't go out of their way to help their fellow class-mates, but the majority of students will sit down and help someone that doesn't understand something. I helped tutor a number of my friends for Calc I, II, III, and Linear Algebra, not because I was getting paid for it...but because they were struggling and needed someone to help them.

So don't believe the cut throat rumours that are flying around about Hopkins...they aren't true.
