Hopkins transfer big issue

Hey guys

I'm currently a college freshman at a not really prestigious institution and I am trying to transfer to Hopkins this fall term. I did apply to Hopkins freshman year and was rejected (extremely competitive high school, had 3.8 uw gpa) and now, I am reapplying as a transfer.

The issue that I am having is that I first entered college hoping to become a doctor. So the courses that I've been taking first semester are all pre med science classes. But during my English class, I read a short excerpt from Francis ***uyama, one of the most outstanding political scientist and a former professor of IR at Hopkins and came to be extremely interested in IR (with most of the focus on East Asia).

My question is, would it look completely arbitrary and random if I apply as an East Asian studies major? I have not demonstrated any interest in this field of study mostly because I recently have become interested in it. I am concerned if I apply as East Asian studies major, it might look like as if I am trying to get into Hopkins through a backdoor and switch my major to Bio since the EA major seems relatively easier to get in compared to Bio major (And I am a Bio major here at the current institution). This is NOT the case though. I am not doing this to get into Hopkins in an easier way (but I really cannot substantiate this since none of my ECs/ courses reflect any interest in IR/EA fields)

Courses I took first semester are:

Biology A
Chemistry A
Bio lab A
Chem lab A
Writing A
Calculus 3 A

with a very strong rec letter and a pretty decent ECs (again, ECs are only related to Bio/medical stuff. Like being a TA for Bio class etc).

They don’t care what your major is, unless it’s BME. Both the biology and East Asian studies majors would be in the college of arts and sciences and you can switch easily once you get there. So I think you would be fine listing East Asian Studies as a major.

And besides, you can still be pre-med with a non-science major too.

But you are correct to be concerned that an admissions officer might think you were trying to game the system (although you really can’t). But your concern can be easily remedied by adding a note with your application (or an email to the admissions office) along the lines of your posting.

send an e-mail to an East Asian studies professor. Most professors at Hopkins respond to they emails in a timely manner
