HOPP Sloan Kettering Summer 2016

Has anyone else here applied to this program? If so, have any of you heard back or anything?

Hello!
Planning to apply for summer 2016. Wondering if you had any advice on creating an application? Additionally, did you end up attending, and if so what was your experience? Thank you!

Seconded. I’m wondering how difficult the requirements are and what the program is like.

Just a question about what constitutes as “New York City Tri-State Area”. I’m more upstate NY, closer to Albany. Am I still allowed to apply and, if accepted, attend?

But going back to your experience, how was it?! What kind of research did you do, and what were the mentors there like?

In regards to creating the application, I noticed that all accepted students had some sort of personal narrative as to why they wanted to study cancer specifically. Some came from strong science backgrounds, others not so much. Both are good because you can use your specific circumstances to create a good narrative. I actually didn’t put that much thought into the essay, about 20 mins worth of work, but I think the story that I had was decent enough to get me in. I definitly should have refined my essay more, however. Making it clear, concise, and poignant is no easy task. I certainly did not do that in my essay, but I probably met other criteria in terms of my test scores and ECs to make up for that.

So I think Albany might be a little far from the city for you to attend the program. I am sure that, if accepted, you would be allowed to go, but I would question whether or not you actually want to do that. I came from North NJ and going the Sloan Kettering took 2 hours one way everyday. Worst part about the summer by far. Entering the city is one thing. Getting to the Upper East Side is another. However, if you are willing to make the long commute, I bet you would be able to go.

The experience was great! I dealt with DNA sequencing and the mentors were phenomenal. My mentor in particular was probably the best one ever. I would get a lot of time to just do crazy things I wanted to on my own, but would also do a lot of work to actually learn about research. Also, the several activities the program sets up are great. Honestly, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to me (for a variety of other reasons as well that are too long to write about. If you want I can message you more specifics).

Also, a lot of you probably want to know how it helps college admissions wise. I can say that if you have a strong academic background and other decent extracurriculars, this program is like an icing on the cake. We have had some strong college acceptances in the early round. Multiple into HYPMS.

I applied. Nothing yet. If I remember correctly, first round rejections are being sent out by April 11 and second round/acceptances by April 29. I highly doubt I’ll get in, but I hope!

@mihirt19 what did you list as your research preferences? I checked pathology and genetics.

Ah I was looking for a thread on this. I applied for Cancer Genomics and Genetic Operations I believe…

I’m really scared I heard the acceptance rate is like 3%. I got into my backup program though and I’m excited about that one, so I don’t think I’ll be too depressed if I get rejected…which will happen lol I don’t have any impressive research yet (hence why I’m applying anyways)…my personal statement was good though.

Post if you’ve heard anything! I’m assuming if you don’t get an email tomorrow April 11th that there’s hope?

Omg I didn’t even process that tomorrow was the eleventh. It’s seemed so far away for so long!
I’ll totally get rejected tomorrow because I have no hooks, no previous research, and I’m a sophomore. But I had fun writing my essay, I guess it’s an experience.

@LushLillies which program did you get into?

@Lbelle43 Haven’t heard anything either! But yeah eleventh is first round rejections lol I’m scared. Where are you applying from?
@LushLillies Yeah I heard acceptance rate is 3% on the Cornell ED 2020 forum and only 19 people got accepted last year. Good luck guys

guys did anyone get any thing yet?

@mihirt19 nj. You?
Did anyone hear anything?
I didn’t want to find out at school so I’m waiting until I get home to check.

@kajay88 nah not yet…hopefully they send the response soon! not sure if they will send an email if you’re moving on to the next round though…

@thebossofbosses quick question do we get an email if we go past the first round?

@Lbelle43 Dubai lol not tri state at all so idk if I’ll get in. I didn’t get the rejection email

@LushLillies did you get any email?

Anyone get anything?

@mihirt19 nope…they could just be late though…for me haha

@kajay88 @LushLillies @Lbelle43 you guys receive anything yet? Last email I got from them was about my complete application and when they release decisions.
