When I had started my first semester of college at UMN-TC, I was doing great, but over the semester, a lot of unexpected and unfortunate things occurred in my life and everything slipped from my grasp. I was dealing with some health issues that led me to miss class, my father was hospitalized, and I got into an accident a few weeks before finals that left me concussed, with a broken nose, and bruised/scraped up all over. I withdrew from one class, got a C+, D, and D+ in my other courses and have a 1.67 GPA for my first semester of college. I did so well in high school so this is heartbreaking to me. I want to go to law school in the future and I worry this will be a huge obstacle for me now. I tried talking to my counselor about the extenuating circumstances I was facing, but she said it was too late to do much now. My parents are also very strict and think I did well so I just feel horrible every time I think about how I really did. It’s caused me to slip into a depressive state and I feel so badly right now. What can I do to ensure that I raise my GPA next semester and get out of this slump? Any advice? Will I get kicked out or do I still have a chance to go to law school?
Depends upon whether or not your health issues remain. If so, then missing classes usually results in a lower grade. If your health issues are resolved, then work hard for top grades.
Law school admissions is mostly about one’s LSAT score.
Hopefully problems won’t reoccur. How can your parents still be expecting you to do well if you had all the health and family problems listed? You need to tell them your grades and that you are on probation (presumably). Agreed that one poor semester does not doom you from attending law school. Let your family deal with your dad’s health unless he is at death’s door.
@user3290 have you checked out the counseling services at the U? They can also help you get back on track and feel better as you are doing so.
