I posted a similar thread in the SAT/ACT section and got no relevant responses (perhaps that was the wrong place to post this). Hopefully this is the right area to put it.

I took the PSAT as a sophomore a few months ago. My selection index was 185. I got a 73 in writing (99 percentile), 67 in critical reading (98 percentile), but a 45 (53 percentile) in math. I'm an honors/AP student and consider myself intelligent, so the low math score was a disappointment. My math background is somewhat weak, as I went to a (poor) private school until 8th grade, where I learned little algebra. In high school they put me into an advanced (though not honors) algebra class, where I received Bs. Currently I'm in geometry and getting As (I took the PSAT prior to taking geometry, but I still missed several algebra problems). [Next year Ill take AP Statistics instead of pre-calculus (itll be easier and increase my GPA). Would colleges prefer that I take pre-calc, though?]

Anyway, on to the most important question: what is the best method for improving my math score? My goal is to be commended, if not a semifinalist, after I take the PSAT next year.

Pick up a math book and then understand the concepts. After understanding the concepts just do TONS of problems. In math the more problems I do the better I get at it. Also whats up with the title? Am I missing something?

Attention grabber. I figured that an interesting title would attract more people.
I apologize if it was inappropriate, but I would appreciate answers to my initial question.

i say go with AP Stat.....because colleges want to see that you took rigoruous courses in high schoool....but remember AP Stat isnt that easy as you think.....youll see

You should take PreCalculus. There will be some concepts taken from that course that will be on the SAT (I don't think it'll be on the PSAT, will it?). It may be a harder class, but you don't want to blank out on a question when it comes to SAT Math.

Well, at my school, AP Stats is infamous for being the easiest AP class. I suppose the colleges won't know that, though. ;)

are you planning on taking the sat2math2c test? because there are a few concepts on the test that are from precalculus.. although i guess you can probably self-learn them if you really wanted to.. just wanted to warn you though.

No. Sophomores are given a percentile, based on other sophomores. I have my report if you need proof.
I did state that I was a sophomore. Sorry if it wasn't clear enough.

Anyway...does anyone have PSAT math advice?

Smiling, yeah I saw that you stated that you were a sophomore, just clarifying for others :)

But yeah, as others have said, just get some prep books and start learning the concepts that are required all over again if you need to, and make sure to look out for the tricks that they use.
