I need help with SAT Math.

I 'm only able to get about 50-60% of the math questions right on SAT practice questions. My score on the PSAT math section is a 520 and I believe it should be much better. Some of my fellow math classmates did better than I did. They got in the high 500s and low 600s. They've been taking honors math since they started highschool. They talk honors algebra 1 and honors geometry. I didnt take honors math until this year. I take Honors Algebra 2/ trig with them. I seem to comprehend the subject a lot better than they do and algebra2/trig is basically math b, which is harder than algebra1 and geometry. I'm also smarter than most of them are. My grade is in the high 90s and most of them only have 80s. I can do mathb easliy. So why didnt I score higher in the PSAT math section? Do you think its because of the fact that I didnt take honors geometry and algebra 1 and thus I didnt cover a lot of material? What should I do. Please respond.

School does not teach the subjects and give problems the same way they are presented on the SAT’s. Remember: SAT’s are something you will never learn in school. At least that’s the case with me.

I read that the new SAT requires a good level of mathmatical knowlege and that the math on it is very much like what is taught in school.

While that may be true, school only teaches the concepts tested on the SAT’s.
It’s up to you make those connections with the math portion on the SAT’s, since CB will find clever ways to combine multiple concepts in a very subtle fashion.
I don’t like it when people say that SAT’s test mathematical knowledge. It’s the manipulation of that knowledge that’s what’s actually being tested. There is no straight up question about what a parabola is or what a slope is.

or maybe you just need to get familiarized with the format; so , practice!

naw u dont need honors i didnt take any math honors and got 710. i reccomend to try ur hadest in math in school and practice a lot.

The problem is that I’m very good at math. I get 90s despite the fact that I slack off. Do you think taking a pro SAT course like Princeton Review will help me a lot especially since I’m quick when it comes to learning math?

To the OP,

That’s good that you are getting 90’s in your classes but the SAT is like another arena- the ETS supposively tests your reasoning skills by translating easy concepts to challenging questions.

To answer your question: no don’t take the Princeton Review course- I don’t think it will help you much at all. I think what will help you is self-prep; get the official sat guide and barrons and just practice math questions and refresh yourself with math concepts that you could’ve forgotten.

I went from a 560 to a 680 in math (I dont know why I didn’t score higher but I will on the Jan test lol)

jk^

jk4lyfe

dudeee 560 to 680 omg how man plz help me im at 600 i need to do well in jan thats my last chance

to sat4lyfe.

Most of it was really just practice and getting used to the different types of questions that was on the test. I practiced alot from the blue book and did almost all the hard math questions for comprehension. I also reviewed some concepts that I was unsure or shaky about; also I looked at the barrons book. Basically what I said up in my previous post. lol
