@hkissgurlz whats move in day like?

@hotchkisshopes:
- Don’t worry, it’s not a stupid question. Dating is definitely allowed, it’s usually a given that two people are dating if they had three walkbacks, but they aren’t necessary. Hooking -up isn’t really addressed by the school. The fear of getting caught isn’t really a problem unless you’re cruising, interdorming, or unlocking a classroom with a master key, which are all not allowed. Otherwise, teachers know it’s a high school, so people do hook up. They don’t usually go out of their way to catch people in the act.

I’m not an athlete at all, so I’m not 100% positive. But I think for preseason, you just go. I don’t know for sure though, so I would email the coach.

It is super easy to make friends. I made some amazing friends this year, and it was only my prep year! Once class started, I made friends really easily, and I am someone who is shy around new people. Dorm life, orientation week, sports, are just some examples of how people make friends here.

Move in day is crazy. You don’t have to be in dress code in case you were wondering. You find out your dorm, get your laptop, have a meeting in chapel, get into your orientation groups, say bye to your parents, and have free time to socialize. It’s pretty hectic. Do you have any other specific questions?

Are people accepting of new students? Just wondering since I’ll be coming in a year later than everyone else.

@confusedonhades
They’re super accepting! New lower-mids fit in so well that I sometimes don’t even realize that they were new.

What kind of bags would you recommend using? Are suit cases fine?

For the summer reading do the “guiding questions” need to be answered? Do they want us to annotate?

@oxfordman Suit cases are definitely fine! I had boxes shipped to Hotchkiss beforehand and I picked them up on move in day, so that’s another idea.

@confusedonhades If you’re reading Year or Wonders, it needs to be annotated. There is a possibility that you write a short paper about it, but other than that you don’t do anything with it for the rest of the year. You might have some discussions in class though! And no, you do not need to do the guiding questions (at least I don’ think so).

Okay because I’m reading outcasts united and I wasn’t really sure what to do about annotating because my school made us do it.

I think you should probably annotate. If it says anything about the questions, do them. If not, it doesn’t really matter. It’s more about if you read it so you can discuss the book in class.

anymore questions???

Hkissgurlz, do most incoming preps take Math 150? I couldn’t quite figure out from the course guide if that was the norm. Are there many preps who place out of that into geometry or a 300 level course?

Does everyone get an orientation group or is it just the new students?

i’m a grad of hotchkiss. there are a decent amount of preps who can get placed out of math 150, but they usually send a placement exam. and only new students are in orientation groups, but there will be two student leaders who are current students of the school!

@soxmom Like aurora94 said, there are many students who take math 150, but I personally was in a 350 course and I was a prep. I had friends in 250, 280, and some even in higher courses. It all depends on how well your child does on the placement test.

@confusedonhades It’s just new students, but it counts for all grades. So you could be in a group with people in other grades as well.

hkissgurlz, one more question for you if you’re still around. How was it being a prep in Math 350 – did you feel comfortable with being younger than most of the rest of students? My son is right on the borderline between taking 150 and 350, but if he does a little bit of review over the summer and takes the test again in August, he’ll probably place into 350. Just wondering if that’s a hard way to start off because most of the other kids in the class are returning students, or if you felt like you adapted and got comfortable with it pretty quickly.

@hkissgurlz Thanks! are you an orientation leader?
