Hotchkiss Revisit

With the first revisit date gone I was wondering how it went for those that attended?

it was so much fun! All the students were so nice.

More details of the revisit please:-)

^ agreed! What did you do?

-arrived at 8 (i think, don’t really remember)
-went to main building and parents chose classes
-students went and found their hosts, took picture together, and then ate breakfast together
-went to 3 classes
-ate lunch in student center
-Took tour of a dorm
-prospective students and parents went to a q and a student panel (a group of hotchkiss students was up on stage)
-Then they left time to mingle. The students and parents got to meet with teachers and coaches of choice
-Time to go! We left with m&ms, hotchkiss sunglasses, and a copy of the photo!

Some of this might be out of order, I don’t really remember :/!

Hi livy2462! What are your impressions of the school? Do you like it?

yeah i loved it! All of the students were so nice and welcoming, and my host was great. The students all seemed to really love the school and they answered every question that I had.

What was the dress for the day?

It really varied a lot. For girls, it was about half and half whether people were wearing skirls/dresses or pants.

Oh ok good I was planning on wearing a dress. When you visited the classes of your choice did they seem like they were putting on a show, or were actually functioning like class would normally whether or not you were there?

The Hotchkiss revisit was well planned, enjoyable and impressive.

There was a reception the night before, that was held in the new heating plant. This idiosyncratic choice of location was made clear when it was explained with great pride that the entire school is now heated by wood chips that come from a 25 mile radius of the campus. The heating bill this year was about 750,000 less than last year. Residue from the wood chips is used to fertilize the school farm, which produces vegetables, fruit, beef (!), chicken, turkey. The heating plant is called (I believe) the Biomass building and it is designed like a museum so you can walk through it and see the exact steps of the process as it is happening. The building is also used as a laboratory and studio for many classes.

The following day the kids were paired with hosts and went to classes with them. Parents had the choice of visiting classes or going to panels, or a combination. The incoming new headmaster spoke as well. In the afternoon there was a meet-and-greet with coaches from all the sports and teachers from the different departments.
My husband also went on a campus tour, as it was the first time he had seen the school. I came away with quite a different sense of the school and the direction it is going in (innovative, international), than I had held previously, which was probably 30 years outdated! I had not picked up on this particularly during the interview, so kudos to Hotchkiss for a revisit that highlighted these aspects.

Son was equally impressed but not by the same things. His comment on the heating plant reception, “it must have been designed for the parents.”

the classes didn’t seem to be putting on a show at all. I went to a chem class and while the teacher let me help with an experiment, the students were working on problem sets and they did their usual work during the class. In Latin, they translated and interpreted poems of Catullus.

That’s good to here. Anyone plan on attending now that they have revisited and if so then what grade?

I still have one more school to revisit so I haven’t made a decision yet. It’s going to be so difficult to choose!

You guys heard about the Cara Munn case?

*hear
But yes I heard about it. It’s saddening and my prayers go out to her family and hopefully she will recover. There are a ton of risks when going to a foreign country but especially China. According to my mom it’s really hard to breathe because of the pollution, in fact one day they couldn’t go out because of a pollution warning.

Well asides from the misfortune of the story, I’m still pretty amazed at the sum that the jury awarded her. I wonder how that’s going to affect the school , long term.

That’s what my mom said when she found out. I’m not sure how they came to that sum(maybe medical expenses…but even those can’t be that much) however, it’s probably coming out of the school’s endowment. That being said maybe financial aid generosity will decrease.

Hotchkiss has stated that their insurance is sufficient to cover the award.

Did the headmaster address that subject during his revisit day speech?
