Hello all,

I am an Upper Mid at THS. I started Hotchkiss as a Lower Mid (Sophmore) and it was the best decision of my life. If anyone is considering Hotchkiss, I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hello all,

I am an Upper Mid at THS. I started Hotchkiss as a Lower Mid (Sophmore) and it was the best decision of my life. If anyone is considering Hotchkiss, I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

What do you like best about your school?

Do you know about the usual stats that a pg has if he/she gets accepted to THS ? (gpa and sat wise.)
Also do they usually get recruited for a sport and have mediocre grades/scores ?
Thanks for the reply.

@xDragonFlyx: Does everything count? You had to pick that question didn’t you!

One thing I love about THS is that everybody would answer this question differently. What I find best at this moment (ask me in three minutes and I’ll probably have thought of s.t. else I love just as much) are the relationships that are formed, not only with peers but with faculty and staff. I’ll spend hours with my theatre teachers just hanging out or asking them advice not only about academics but personal matters as well. Every day I talk to my dorm’s house keeper about how things are going, chat with DH staff about classes, and say hello to the other staff members as they walk by. The students are also really friendly. There is always someone to sit with at meals. There is a great sense of community at Hkiss, s.t. with which I am sure all students will agree.

Some other answers I would give are

the small class sizes with intellectually curious students lead to great discussions.

the great opportunities (91 students and a bunch of faculty left on a school funded trip to Antarctica today)

the ability and opportunity to pursue your passions as much as you want

I hope this helped!

@casualties, I’m sorry, but I don’t. That is probably a great question for an admissions officer. I am sure they can help you. I do know that our PGs are recruited for their sports but I also know that the school accepts those they believe will be able to handle the work load. I am sorry I couldn’t have been of more help.

Alright, thanks. Good luck

Thank you

I am glad I could help!

What kinds of kids are accepted to hotchkiss? How is the art/music program?

Sent from my ADR6330VW using CC

Is there a certain art in which you are interested eg performing, visual, etc? I don’t wish to bore you with a book on the Hotchkiss Arts program ;). Also, would you be entering as a freshman or a sophomore? Hotchkiss has a required humanities program for freshman and sophomores (I can tell you more about this, if you like). While this means that preps and LMs don’t have the option to take more advanced art classes, it also means that all students are required to take art. Hotchkiss strives to create well-rounded students and requiring an art in 9th and 10th grade is just one of the ways they do this.

About the kinds of students H’kiss accepts. . . I would say that the students at Hotchkiss have many more differences than they do commonalities. Yet the students at Hotchkiss all seem to be intelligent, passionate, nice, and hardworking. They all add something to the school. Whether it be the student who is the youngest member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra or that student who brightens everyones day with a smile, they enhance the school and the community for it is the students that are Hotchkiss.

Are there any students that had low SSAT scores going in to the admissions process?

I am interested in performing arts and if I got in I would be entering as a sophmore. And yeah, i’d like to know more about that class

@Dragonfly: I love the Theatre program at Hotchkiss! The Hotchkiss Dramatic Association (HDA) is the theatre group on campus. It has a board consisting of eight students (I am one of them) and the theatre faculty. New members of the board are chosen from the returning students who have dedicated a lot of time to the theatre. It is the board’s job to pick the three main-stage shows for the year. The fall is always a musical, the winter is normally s.t. classical, and the spring is usually something contemporary. This year the musical was Bat Boy:the Musical, the current show is Much Ado ABout Nothing, and the spring show is Vernon God Little. There are also a couple of student directed productions each season. If you are really interested in the theatre program at Hotchkiss and are in the area, I would suggest going to one of the productions to see if you could see yourself in the program.

One can really get involved with the theatre at Hotchkiss. This fall I stage managed the musical. This winter I am directing a one-act and am also assistant set and light designing Much Ado. And this spring I will be assistant directing Vernon God Little. Because Vernon also has a stage manager, my job as AD will include running half of the rehearsals. As you can see, there is a lot of opportunity for student leadership.

Walker Auditorium is a pretty impressive space. It has around 600 seats. The stage is actually larger than that of three broadway theatre stages. We also have a blackbox that holds about 100 people. I have had theatre classes taught in both locations.

As a Sophomore you would be in the Humanities program and if the art you chose was theatre, you would have your humanities subjects (english, history, philosophy) with the people in your theatre class. This creates a very close class. The idea behind the humanities program is that those subjects are all connected. By studying Macbeth in english and performing scenes from it in theatre while also learning about King James I in history and discussing Nietzsche’s idea of “the will to power,” one can get a better understanding of all of the subjects. The humanities program is only the first two years, though, and starting Junior year one can start taking electives in history, art, religion, science, etc. A list of all electives can be found in the course catalogue.

@Smiley: I’m sorry but I don’t know. One thing that is great about Hotchkiss is that people don’t really talk about their grades and when they do they use subjective words like “well” or “badly.” It creates a little less competition in a fairly competitive world. For the same reason, seniors rarely talk about where they are applying to college.

Hey, i have a sister who is in your grade and currently attends Hotchkiss. How hard would you say it is for one to find their voice at Hotchkiss through sports, leadership, etc?
