What is the community like at Hotchkiss? Primarily, I’d like to know how the students treat eachother. Do they tend to help eachother or compete against eachother?

Also, what about your experience at Hotchkiss stands out the most? Was there a particular department that is stronger than others? (It seems to me that Hotchkiss is very well balanced and I’m just asking to see if my perceptions are accurate.)

What personality traits do you think make some students more successful than others?

Thank you. I’m always curious to hear about recent graduates’ experiences, especially since you’ve had a bit of time to reflect.

neato, glad to see that you and D are still hot on Hotchkiss.

Hi Bearcats, How are the Humanities (English, History) and Math programs at Hotchkiss? I like to know if most of your teachers are inspiring and dedicated. What do you find special about these programs? Thanks.

Hi Bearcats, I was just wondering what percentile you got on each section of the SSAT? Thank you!

Sorry guys I have been traveling for my interviews since I posted and am still on my bb right now. Ill post once I get to the hotel tonight.

On the goood side I just accepted my dream job so no more traveling while juggling school for me starting tmr

What is the community like at Hotchkiss? Primarily, I’d like to know how the students treat eachother. Do they tend to help eachother or compete against eachother?

A little bit of both. I would say it is quite a competitive environment, but at the same time people are helpful to an extent (like if you forgot what the HW assigned is people aren’t gonna not tell you or go out of their way to tell you something wrong). I don’t think the two things are mutually exclusive. There are also study groups where kids study together for an exam.

Also, what about your experience at Hotchkiss stands out the most?
Learning to be independent - going in as a kid, leaving as an adult
Preparedness for college - I have a higher gpa while working less in an engineering program at college compared to Hotchkiss, imagine that
The friendship you make - those tend to last a life time since you eat with them, study with them and live with them

Was there a particular department that is stronger than others? (It seems to me that Hotchkiss is very well balanced and I’m just asking to see if my perceptions are accurate.)
Hotchkiss is i think a nose stronger in the humanities and social science compared to math and science, but it is pretty well balanced as you pointed out

What personality traits do you think make some students more successful than others?
successful in what regards? Socially? Academically? expand a little on that and I can help with this question

Hi Bearcats, How are the Humanities (English, History) and Math programs at Hotchkiss? I like to know if most of your teachers are inspiring and dedicated. What do you find special about these programs? Thanks.

Humanities are strong. For history I really liked Flemma (now Dr. Flemma), and that is for a person who hated studying history. So yes, I would say he’s somewhat inspiring, you need to be to actually make me interested in studying history

Math is not as strong as the humanities. I think its more of a factor of the student body as opposed to the teachers tho. I just think hotchkiss students are more of the humanities type than the math type (like the ones at exeter). However, for math, I really liked having bolmer and Dr Eso as my teachers. Bolmer has swagger if you may and Eso is just brilliant in the subject

Hi Bearcats, I was just wondering what percentile you got on each section of the SSAT? Thank you!

99% math (I have always been kinda the math whiz type) , like 80% verbal i think?

Bearcats:
Thank you very much! What did you get for reading? I’m not exactly great on that section…

Bearcats. did you have to rush throughout the day because of EC’s and all the homework?

I am interested in Hotchkiss and have a few questions for you

Hi, I’m also a recent Hotchkiss alumni, and I thought I could help answer some questions.

What other schools did u apply to other than Hotchkiss (where were u accepted) and why did u chose Hotchkiss?

I applied to about 9 boarding and day schools, and the main ones that I was choosing between were Hotchkiss, Andover, Exeter and Taft. I didn’t like Exeter at all, mostly because of the size. With about 1200 people (I think!), it seemed more like a university campus than a highschool. With my first time ever leaving home, I wanted a community and I didn’t get that feel from Exeter. It was similar feeling with Andover. Taft was another choice, but I only applied because my parents wanted me to. Upon further inspection, I realized that Taft had this weird jock vs student relationship (at least it seemed to me). In the end, I really chose Hotchkiss because everyone was so diverse in their activities (it’s not very rare to find a varsity athlete who participates in the theatre program, and other things like that). The community at Hotchkiss is so welcoming, and I had a really great tour there!

About how many hours of homework do you have each night?
I didn’t participate in the Humanities program, but I am a lowerclassmen proctor so I know a bit about the workload now. In the beginning, during your freshman year, it will not be hard for you to get most of your work done during study hall hours (8-10). The teachers in the Humanities program talks to each other a lot, so if you have a major philosophy paper due in two weeks, you won’t have a big history one also. As you get older, you will get more work especially with AP classes. I took 4 AP classes my junior year, and the latest I stayed up most nights was about 12:45 simply on homework. Teachers are also very okay with giving extensions if you talk to them beforehand if you need it.

Hotchkiss really hard? Is it hard to get good grades? were you in the top of your class? and how much harder is it than ur old middle school(did u go to a public or private school)?

Hotchkiss is competitive, but I don’t think it’s very hard to get good grades if you begin talking to the teachers. Time management, again, is really important so make sure you focus on that a lot. I had a lot of trouble in one of my math classes, but then I began having individual meetings with my teacher, and my grade literally went up one whole letter grade (B- to A-). It’s really how much work you put in for your grades. Hotchkiss will DEFINITELY be harder than all middle schools, regardless of whether it was private or public.

What college do you go to now, and do you recommend Hotchkiss to prospective students?

I’d rather not say where I go, but it’s a pretty well rated LAC. Hotchkiss was a great experience for me, and I definitely would tell people to apply!
