Hotchkiss vs. Choate

Haha. For people unfamiliar with rowing this may help : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbPOe9ACXzc

I just posted this video on another thread but maybe it needs to be posted here, too.

Take that, Frank Howard.

Frank Howard told me to mention that there are sports, other than crew, where you can watch your opposition while beating them/him/herā€¦wrestling, boxing, baseball/softball (especially when you hit a walk-off homer and you get to watch AND run thru the opposition on your way to victory), the goalie in hockey/soccer/lacrosse, etc. B-)

I got the quote wrong (my bad!)

ā€œThere is no other sport IN THE WORLD where you can see your opposition when youā€™re beating them.ā€

Thatā€™s better. :-*

Ah, Photo Mom, then please add ā€œcricketā€ to the list of sports in which you can see your opponents while beating them. :stuck_out_tongue:

P.S. Also, as a parent of a Hotchkiss grad, Class of ā€˜16ā€™, ā€¦go, Bearcats!

@toombs61ā€¦That sound you just heard was Maria Hotchkiss turning over in her graveā€¦ X_X

Congrats to future (and current ) Bearcats!

Whoops. Sounds like Iā€™m so discombobulated that Iā€™m on the verge of joining Mrs. Hotchkiss in the graveyard. So, make thatā€¦ Iā€™m a ā€œparent of a Hotchkiss graduate, Class of '12 [!]ā€ and, for what it is worth, a parent of a potential grad of Dartmouth College, Class of '16 [!]. (I think/hope Iā€™ve got things straight here now.) As I approach my dotage, I guess that I canā€™t count/remember very well. Oh, well. (Please note, Maria Hotchkiss, that it is my son, and NOT I, who is the THS gradā€¦ so, please rest easy in your grave.) That said, I am still alert enough these days to speak cogently at times about sports. (Photo Mom, that sound you heard, while you were telling us that crew is the only sport where one can watch the opposition while beating them, was Coach Frank Howard turning over in his grave.)

@toombs61 How has your son been doing in Dartmouth? Is his Hotchkiss experience/training helpful to his college experience? What industry (or graduate school?) is he heading to in a few months?

P-Pac, my son is doing fabulously at Dartmouth these days. (Thanks for asking.) He holds a 3.8 GPA in his major (Engineering) and a 3.6 GPA over all (he will have a minor in Economics). His years at Hotchkiss were most helpful in achieving academic success in college. Although he has always been a bright kid (much brighter than his father, I promise you), his three years at Hotchkiss, as he has often told me, taught him to focus and understand a subject in great detail rather than, as had been his practice in school prior to THS, to consume vast quantities of random material only to regurgitate such pottage quickly and then forget it. He learned to study and learn smarter, not harder, at Hotchkiss. Upon graduation, he plans to be a mechanical engineer. He is now exploring his options, which experience is always both a thrill and a chill for the young student crashing into the world of the employed.

Thanks for clearing that up and Congrats! Your son sounds like he had an amazing SS/College experience and thatā€™s always so wonderful to hear. But ā€¦ Hotchkiss should have a Crew Team. :-w

Thanks very much, P-Mom. Also, I agree with you on all accounts: (a) my son has been most fortunate in both prep school and college AND (b) Hotchkiss should have a crew team (but I fear that it never will). :))

Reading old threads sometimes may show how much these schools can ā€œimproveā€ for better.
