Hotel or Hostel new UW?

Hey,
I'm a prospective grad student who is visiting the campus in a few weeks, and wanted to see if anybody had recommendations as to where to stay? I'm looking to spend as little as possible, as close to campus as possible.

after watching the movie hostel i cannot ever stay in a hostel ever again!
Sorry this isn't much help I just stumbled upon your thread.

The only hostels in Seattle are downtown, in the Pike Place Market area. Lots of fun, and if you are on a tight budget that would be the way to go, although you'd have to take a bus to campus, maybe with a transfer at some point. Count on at least half an hour for this. The hostels are the Green Tortoise http://www.greentortoise.net/ , and Hostels International Seattle. http://www.hiseattle.org/

Hotel/motels within walking distance of campus are going to be pricier. Here's a page that lists them: http://www.gonorthwest.com/washington/seattle/hotels-university.htm. I'm afraid I can't make any specific recommendations, but I haven't heard that any of them are dives. The University Motel starts at $70 for a single, and I doubt you'd find anything cheaper that is close to campus.

Perhaps the department you are applying to can make some recommendations?

Thanks a bunch. I'd already found those and was hoping for something that was both cheap and in the university area, but I guess that doesn't exist! Nobody else I've asked knows of anything either, so I think I'm just going to go with HI and bus it over to UW. That way I'm downtown for the St. Patty's day festivities.

That should work out well. I hope you have a great visit!

For future reference: HI is closing for good after this weekend. I was initially scared that I'd have to find somewhere else to stay as their website said 'closing Saturday', and that cuts into my time there. It turns out though, that they will take guests on Saturday, but they close at 11am Sunday.

I'd heard they were closing this year, but thought it was during the summer. Kind of a bitter-sweet week-end for them, I imagine.
