the prompt for the cornell supplement is to describe a time when you provided outstanding service to someone.

are they looking for specifically SOMEONE or is it a flexible subject (aka a group of people) and does the service have to be spectacular like "I saved someone's life!" or just a different situation?

I agree it sounds like a good topic and since you probably haven't saved many lives I would go with you just simply providing great service. Talk about providing excellent service to a guest when checking in or booking a reservation or talk about a time as a waiter when you provided outstanding service to a table. Talk about whatever work experience you might have and how you were able exceed the expectations of someone or a group of someones.

do we have to write about our work experience in a hotel? I work 17 hours a week in a hotel and so far nothing that exciting has happened. I can't think of an instance when I provided EXCELLENT service to a guest. If I write an essay about my work experience, the whole story about providing excellent service to a guest in my hotel would be made up. I'm wondering if it would have the same effect if I wrote about voluntarily helping a teacher in school.

it looks like there aren't a lot of people applying to hotel school on cc.

since the only work experience i have is supervising at a concessions stand on weekends, i thought id write something about how on my parents' birthdays, i provide them with a full five star cooked meal of their choice. would that be adequate you think?

I guess anything is okay as long as it shows service. I was just worried the deans would find it weird that I'm not writing about my work experiences in a hotel.
