Hotels for Graduation 2014

I have been searching hotels for graduation 2014 and there is nothing available! Can this be possible? Any suggestions as to getting a hotel room for graduation weekend next May? Are the hotels requiring a minimum of 3 night stay and that is why they are showing up "unavailable"? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Nittany Lion Inn and the Penn Stater are probably totally booked, but they will give you a reservation for one night during graduation weekend (I think they are the only hotels that don’t have a 2 or 3 night minimum). Any existing reservations for next year’s graduation must be cancelled at least 30 days ahead to get a refund. You could try the online reservation system at the end of March/beginning of April next year and will probably be able to get something. That’s what we did and I was able to get 2 rooms this year. I had to keep trying multiple times a day, but it worked out. Some students may not graduate when they expect and some of the relatives can’t make it after all, so the rooms open up. It seems ridiculous to have to book 2 or 3 nights when you just need one and some of the hotels charge $400-$600 for each night during graduation! I think the Penn Stater was $250 and the Nittany Lion Inn was $299 for a standard room during graduation.

Have tried Craigslist? sometimes people here rent out their houses for graduation. How far afield have you looked?

Good luck. I tried to get a reservation toward the end of May and the very few rooms that were available were outrageous. We are staying in Lock Haven. It’s not too inconvenient for us because our son goes there and we have to take him back anyhow.

Well the only place I had luck getting 3 rooms for 1 night is in Huntingdon, PA. It really is such a scam these places want 2-3 nights minimum when you only need the 1 night! According to Google maps it’s about 45-50 minutes away from University Park - I think Altoona may have a room - would that be more convenient or are they the same distance away from University Park?

altoona is larger with more options (hotels and restaurants). They are the same time wise. Travel to/from altoona is via interstate highway.
almost the same distance is lock haven and clearfield (via I80), but they are like huntingdon.

Altoona is more convenient, because it’s an easier (fewer turns, places to get lost, etc.) drive than from Huntingdon.

You might try the local B&Bs. I ran my house as a (permitted) B&B for years and while the football weekends were always booked a year ahead grad weekends tended to book during the summer or school year. (I’m less than a mile from campus.)
