Is it really much cheaper to move out?

Uhh, in general, definitely.

Went from a triple in dorms that cost 1100+, to a single in a house that costs 900 plus utilities and food. So for a slight discount, I moved from a triple to a single in a nice house. And there are definitely cheaper options around campus. Doubles for $300-400, etc.

I’ll be a sophomore next year. I want to live in a single.

Should I look for apartments outside, or is there someway I could find something in the dorms? Any of you know about potential vacancies?

well imma be a junior, but what about all the appliances and internet and stuff? or should i just register for housing dorm just in case…?

I really want to live in a single too
What are some options?
I’m a sophomore next year so I can’t apply for singles in the dorms

I thought it was easier for non-freshman to get certain types of rooms in dorms. Not sure of all the details there though, just what it seemed like with my friends. I think you should apply for housing just in case, but I feel like the deadline to accept was rather early.

I would definitely start looking now, primarily through Craigslist. There are some other sites, but craigslist worked really well for me. It was me and 4 friends, so we searched a ton of listings, and we eventually found a 5br that worked. The price was a little steep ($900/room) but not unreasonable for a single.

Appliances we split. Most people had leftover things from home (microwave, toaster, etc.). That could up the cost a bit. For utilities, we pay about $60 a person a month. We got internet for $20/month, so $4 a person.

does anyone know how much the deposit fee is for housing?

i don’t know if this is right, but i remember paying 300 bucks at some point last year

I paid $1667/mo for a double (at Foothill) last sememster, and it was ridiculous.

I moved out and now have a 13x10 room all to myself in a nice 2bd/1ba apartment. I have the larger room and my share of the rent is $870/mo.

Yes, you can go lower if you live in a slightly worse apartment. It can also be higher if you select the wrong location (hint: southside = expensive, northside = quiet and cheap).

I think I got a good deal. Sure, it’s kind of far, but with a bicycle, the distance issue is solved. However, words can’t describe how much more comfortable I am now vs the dorms. The extra money I have left over is also extremely nice.

Utilities - $60/mo total for two people. That includes electricity, phone (yes, we have a landline), and internet.

As for my flatmate? I found him on craigslist. I just hunted around for an apartment I liked, and when I found one, I placed the deposit and put an ad on craigslist for a room available. There are many people looking for a deal, so finding a roommate shouldn’t be too hard.

I guess what’s happening right now is that I’m unsure of whether I’m gonna find a good place or not.

How do we even look for apartments?

^ Craigslist. Or, you know, walking around and calling the numbers posted on “For Rent” signs. “The old fashioned way” I think they call it.

yeah checked out a couple apartments today on north side. They weren’t very satisfactory. Two of my friends are looking for a 3 bedroom apartment. Are they hard to find? And if we wait a little longer, will more apartment renting offers come out? I feel like there’s not that many of them out at this moment…

I’m looking for somewhere to live next year and seems like a lot of the houses that are out are looking for people to move in right now or sometime soon.
I’m getting scared now… I just submitted my dorm application just in case things don’t work out
I don’t want to be homeless haha

^ yeah same. That’s why I think if we wait a bit, more places will be open and we won’t have to move in NOW. cuz paying for Foothill + apartment is just ridiculous

how much was the deposit fee? see this is the entire problem. asking for our decisions so damn early. they don’t send the offers until school is over anyways…grr damn admissions

i think $300 sounds right.

I think I’m just not gonna do it (pay 300 dollars that is for dorms). I really want my own room and 17000 just does not sound worthy

Me too I want my own room!
Sharing a room is hard I think
I was always careful not to annoy my roommate but she hates me O_O

I was alright with my roommate last year. He just had some weird smelling farts every so often. This year, in a triple, I’m just saying no. Got one that just camps in the room and the other is just annoying (although I can stand him more than the camper). Sharing a room isn’t bad if you guys have similar habits, but Berkeley’s system of pairing up people just sucks big time.
