During the first week, when freshmen are expected to move through different houses before making their house selection, do they have a base room where they can deposit all their luggage/belongings?

During Rotation, incoming freshmen (technically “pre-frosh”) will live in a particular room the entire time. They will visit the various Houses for lunch and dinner and other activities.

So frosh dump all of their belongings in this “temporary” random room and then, at the end of rotation, move all of their stuff from there to the other room? Do parents usually stick around during that week or do frosh usually move in to that random room with parents’ help and then they depart and frosh switch after rotation independently?

Also, does Caltech offer any services for transportation during move-in from local airports to campus?

Yup!

The latter, unless they’re local. Students can do things like move in a small amount of belongings for Rotation and then bring over the rest of their things once they’ve figured out where they’ll be living for the rest of the year, or just keep most of their stuff packed up for the first week, etc. The Hovses are pretty close together (as you’ve probably seen during PFW) and students are quick to help one another so fortunately the move itself isn’t much of a hassle.

As far as I’m aware, no, aside from Super Shuttle and Prime Time Shuttle, which deposit you directly onto campus. You can have large items shipped to Caltech and they’ll be held for you until you pick them up, although shipping can be expensive, of course.
