Im going to be a spring transfer student at Rutgers...now a couple of friends I know have a house down there and they have offered me a room in it.. the house is very near the campus and student center 1 block away..... Do you think Ill loose out on a lot of social aspects of dorm life liveing in a house?

Yes. While I don't know the specifics of Rutgers housing, in a dorm you instantly meet 40-60 people. I'm assuming this is a traditional type of dorm, BTW, not the one that is the equivalent of an apartment. Residential suites aren't as friendly, but at least you'll still have common meals. Another advantage is that in the dorms they usually have a set of programs set up to help with your transition, as well as having an RA.

I think when you don't live on campus, you do miss out on a lot. For instance, there's a lot of clubs or events that go on at night and if I didn't live on campus, I'd feel too lazy to come all the way over here. Plus, I meet tons of people on the elevators and halls of my dorm. It's just much more convinient I'd say, however, if it's a money issue, go with what's cheaper.

well the house is across the street from rutgers main campus's student center and library and such so I wont be far away from campus in that respect, I think Im going to try to get the dorm on the main campus and If its not available then Ill go for the house..TOugh choice for me really, but I would really perfer to be on the main campus where everything happens.

Its not really a money issue the prices are very similar.

Well, I think on-campus might be a little bit cheaper if you don't have to pay utilities, interenet, etc. However, some dorms do require a meal plan so look into that if you don't want one. I'd say go with what you feel is best.

Dorm life is overrated. It can be good experience or a really bad experience. I say go with the house since you already know those people and dorms can be so ****ty and uncomfortable. They're dirty, smelly, run down, and worthless.

Umm...even crappy uncomfortable dorms can be great for meeting new people and creating a social environment. I'd definitely go with the dorms if you can...it really is what you make of it.

rutgers is a huge school so you probably wouldnt have much trouble meeting other new transfers or making some friends. are you close friends with this guy and od you think you would hang out with him and his friends there anyway? while dorms are good to meet new people you would have a ready made set of friends with the people you lived with (potentially). tons of kids at rutgers live off campus so from what i know you owuldnt be close to the only one

If the house is really close to the middle of campus, I say go for it. The dorm experience has its place, but if the people you'd be living with are friends you'd be hanging out with anyway and you're still close enough to participate in campus events easily, it seems like the best of all possible worlds.

Go with the dorm. It's the best opportunity to meet the greatest number of people.

I'd say it depends on what type of person you are.
If you're a social type who wants interact a lot, you should go for the dorm. If you prefer your solitude and keep to yourself, then you should go for the house.
