housing advice!

Hi, I was recently admitted to the Columbia Class of 2016 and I am kind of torn over the housing options.

Carman has the reputation of being the most social dorm, which sounds nice, but I don't like the idea of it being loud and messy constantly. I also don't think I want a roommate this year, but I'm not entirely opposed to the idea.

The only problem that I have with John Jay is that there aren't any kitchens, and I'm getting the mealplan with the least number of meals, so I do intend to cook for myself every once in a while. Plus it doesn't have A/C, although this won't matter for most of the year.

Furnald seems to be a good option, but it's a bit isolated from the other two dorms, I've heard, and has a reputation of being antisocial. I definitely don't want to miss out on any opportunities for making friends and having fun, but Furnald has the best and cleanest facilities, apparently, so I'm really leaning towards it.

Can anyone comment on freshman housing at Columbia? Should I stick with Furnald?

Thanks.

Read/heard Johnjay has a dining hall within the same hall whereas for Furnald one has to commute a minute or so to the JJ dining hall.

If that helps…

Pretty much everyone says that even on the mealplan with fewer meals very few people run out, and that’s without cooking. I wouldn’t let that factor into your kitchen/no kitchen dorm decision. Are you planning on going to DoC? That’s probably where you’d get a better feel for which one you’d like most.

The lack of kitchens in John Jay is noticeable. You get a microwave and a sink for 40 people on a floor; you can heat up Hot Pockets or pop instant popcorn, but you definitely won’t be doing any real cooking (unless you go to your friends’ kitchens in Hartley/Wallach or Furnald). If you want to cook, I wouldn’t recommend John Jay. But you can easily survive off of the meal plan and take-out without cooking, so if you’re not really into cooking, John Jay might not be so bad.

The lack of A/C will kill you in late August, September, and April (and maybe even March, if 2013 has as warm a late winter as 2012 had). You’ll want to make sure you get fans for that month, and yes fans is plural. I got one fan when I moved into John Jay and it was not enough; I had to go out and get a second fan the same day. Furnald has some clear advantages over John Jay, but John Jay is definitely livable and has some advantages (e.g. John Jay Dining Hall, proximity to Hamilton, more social environment) over Furnald.

I live in Furnald, and I’m very close to Ferris, which has been adequate (if not spectacular) for my dietary needs this year. John Jay Dining Hall is rather inconsistent I find; some days are pretty awesome, others are really meh. Some floors of Furnald have absolutely no interaction, while on others (like mine) you get to meet the most amazing people.

Bathrooms are great, singles are pretty nice, you can study in your room without people bothering you; you really can’t go wrong with imo the most well-rounded dorm for underclassmen. Enjoy a nice dorm before you get relegated to the depths of housing your sophomore year.

Also, get the plan with fewer meals. You’re not going to have that much time to spend in the dining halls.

1) Can a student in Furnald still go to Johnjay and have food? Is this allowed? If yes, why should he/she go to Ferris as I understand JohnJay is only 1 minute away from Furnald …

2) Does carmen have single rooms also (even though they are very minimal in number)? If yes, could that be one of the choices Carment single rooms?

Thanks

Not a current student, but I think I know the answer to both of these. Please fact check me if I’m way off the mark.

1) Both freshman meal plans include “meals” for use at both John Jay and Ferris + dining dollars that can be used at a bunch of places on campus. Ferris/JJ may have better hours/food for you, but it’s a personal choice, you are not restricted to one or the other.

2) Carman (hah) has single rooms for RAs only I believe.

@abscalc

 1. Absolutely! Where you live has no impact on where you can eat. People from Furnald (and Carman) eat in John Jay all the time. Ferris might be slightly closer, but really the reason that people eat in Ferris is because it’s open from 8am–8pm, while John Jay is only open for a few hours in the morning and evening. But all freshman can choose from meal plans that can be used at John Jay, Ferris, and Hewitt, regardless of where they live.

Carman might have singles for RAs, but they don’t have any singles for freshmen. For all interns and purposes, Carman is limited to mini-suites consisting of 2 doubles and private bathroom.

Now I’d like to share some questions that were PMed to me. I feel like they’re questions many people have, and I hope the person who sent them to me (who shall remain anonymous) won’t mind that I publicly answer them.

1) How many housing choices need to be made? Assuming Furnald and JJ are the first two choices, what would you recommend as the other choices (want only singles).

2) Why is wallach/hartley typically the “not preferred” choices for the first year students - what are the pros and cons of wallach hartley singles? Are they not close by to the dining halls ? Do freshmen normally not stay here - Just wanted to understand if and when it gets allocated and not the first two choices.

3) How are the linens/bedding cleaned - do the students do it themselves or is the bedding cleaned by the cleaners periodically?

4) Where do students normally keep the important stuffs like wallet, passports, documents, etc? Are they given some secured closet with lock and key?

5) Who cleans the rooms - students or the cleaners? If latter, is it ok to leave the wallets etc in the room and go?

You have to rank all eight choices, I believe: JJ single, JJ double, Furnald single, Carman double, Hartley single, Hartley single, Wallach single, Wallach double. I could be wrong on this (hopefully someone who’s a current freshman will remember) but that’s what I think.

Very good question! I think that it’s just not seen as a typical freshman dorm, since it’s mixed-grade housing. Some people also bristle at the emphasis on community events; I know I was skeptical of that when filling out my first-year housing application. It also has fewer singles than John Jay or Furnald, meaning some people who select it could end up in a blind double. But they really are two nice dorms. They just have bad reputations.

The linens aren’t cleaned; students have to wash their own bedding. Some do, but many don’t.

You’re not given any locked drawers. If you’re absolutely paranoid, you could bring a lockbox, but most students just keep their valuables in their desk. If they’re concerned about security, they make sure to lock their doors.

Yeah, no one goes into the rooms except students. RAs might knock on the door and then investigate if they smell pot or suspect you’re drinking, and sometimes maintenance people will come into the rooms to do renovations over vacations, but during the school year, only students go into the rooms. Bathrooms and (sometimes) kitchens are cleaned, but not student rooms.

Thanks pwoods for such a detailed reply. Appreciate it.

Is breakfast served in Johnjay dining hall? If yes, what are the timings? Upon checking online, there does not seem to be breakfast in johnjay but only in Ferris. Could you please clarify?

Well, it depends what you consider breakfast. John Jay is open for breakfast/lunch from 11 am to 1:30 pm and for dinner from 5 to 8 from Monday through Thursday. It’s closed Friday and Saturday and on Sundays, it’s open longer in the morning, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Also, and I just discovered this, there’s an express coffee/pastries caf

When do the classes start typically in the morning everyday? At what time does one need to go to the college everyday? Normally breakfast is taken prior to the classes, right? So, where and when do first year students take their breakfast normally before going to their classes in the morning?

Also is John jay dining hall completely closed on week ends or only in the mornings? as its not clear when you said - “It’s closed Friday and Saturday and on Sundays, it’s open longer in the morning, from 10 am to 2 pm.”

Thank you.

Next semester, classes start at 8:40; I hear there are also seminars starting at 8:00. You go to class whenever you want (unless it’s a required seminar), no one will care. We eat breakfast at John Jay or Ferris if we’re not sleeping in/working (which isn’t often).

John Jay is also closed on Fridays and Saturdays, but (it’s the only option) open on Sundays.
