Okay so who can give me the low down on housing at SDSU? What is the housing application is like and if you pick certain things like living in an LLC, how does that change what housing you get? I know people who have gotten Granada, an apartment for their first year so I’m just wondering if there’s things I can pick to better my chances for dorms like Cuic or Granada. I know you can’t pick which dorm you want on the housing application but I’d love for someone to give me more information on it. Are there specific dorms reserved for over the break housing? Thank you!
@mnrwa778 - I believe they try to change up each year where they house the RLCs (Residential Learning Communities) and LLCs, in part to purposely avoid having students try to live in a particular dorm. The exception to that rule is the Honors dorm, which for many years was in one specific dorm, but this year was put in the newly renovated Zura Hall. Originally, they had discussed moving Honors into the new dorm that is supposed to open in the fall, but I’m not sure if they still plan to do it. But with the new dorm opening, it will be very hard to guess which dorm will house the various communities of students.
@Fish125 thank you! Is there another new dorm being built besides the new dorm Zura?
@mnrwa778 - Yes! It is being built on College Avenue near the Student Union. It will be a mixed-use facility with dorm rooms for several hundred students, as well as stores like Trader Joe’s. https://newscenter.sdsu.edu/housing/south_campus_plaza.aspx

Thanks for the info this looks amazing! So it is set to be finished for the new fall 2016 students?
From what I’ve heard (I’m an SDSU alumna and the parent of a current Aztec) is that the dorm portion will be completed by August, 2016 so students will be able to move in, and the Trader Joe’s portion will be ready sometime in 2017. We drove by the area last night, and construction looks to be moving forward at a steady pace.
@Fish125 that makes sense thanks so much I appreciate it! Filling out the housing app as soon as it opens in early March. They said priority isn’t given to people who submit it early and it doesn’t matter when you submit it. Is this true? I was just going to submit it right away just in case.
@mnrwa778 I’ve not heard one way or another whether it helps to submit early, but I completely agree with you…submit it as early as you can and make sure that they receive it. By submitting it early, if you have any issues with the application, you have plenty of time to fix it. And, as an aside, always, always check your webportal regularly so you don’t miss anything especially deadlines (whether it be for admissions, registration, etc.).
@Fish125 thank you so much you’ve been very helpful! One last question, once we’ve submitted the housing app can you go back and change anything on it?
@mnrwa778 Hmmmmmmmmmmmm…that is a very good question, but I don’t know. Please contact the housing office, and they will be very helpful. You’ll be on hold a bit, but they truly are nice folks and really want the students to get the most out of their time in the dorms. As a parent, I’ve had to deal with other CA public universities’ housing departments, and SDSU has always been the most helpful.
@Fish125 that’s good to know thank you! I’ll have to give them a call. I doubt I’ll need to change anything but I just wanted to check
