housing assignments

When are the housing assignments coming out?

I was reading up on the 2016 Facebook page yesterday. Anyways, some people suggested that they would get their assignments on the 9th of July. It looked as though a lot of people already know what building they’ll be in, though.

Honestly, if you haven’t received it by now, it can’t hurt to call the Housing Office and ask when you’ll get an assignment. That’s what I did last year. Your answer will probably change every time you call, though.

We just finished orientation. You do NOT get your dorm assignment until you go to orientation - in fact they made a joke about it. They asked anyone who already knew their dorm assignment to raise their hands, then said “that’s a concern, because we just finished and you won’t get it until later today.”

You learn the dorm, but don’t get your actual room or roommates until July 9 on VIP, which is probably why you’re hearing some ppl mention that date. Son was very happy he got in the music LLC at thornsell, his first choice.

Some knew their dorm assignments before orientation because they were in Capstone, the Honors College dorm, or had requested a roommate who already knew their assignment. At orientation the student learns which dorm he/she will be in, but does not learn which room or who their roommate will be.

I can confirm that some students at least knew their assigned dorms. Son received an email from housing in mid May confirming he was accepted for common courses, with his assigned dorm building and with the two courses he was preregistered for. This was also confirmed once he went to orientation. The housing email also warned that changing either class during orientation would jeopardize his housing assignment. Also, for about a day after he received his email from housing, an assigned room number was even shown on the housing site, although it disappeared as quickly. We are curious to see if this does indeed end up as his assigned suite.

It’s possible they accidentally posted some early - but in any case, according to the USC Housing facebook page, all students will find out their specific housing assignment by July 9th. It could possibly be earlier, and acccording to the FB page the student will be alerted when it’s available via their USC e-mail account.

My best guess is that they assign students to living/learning communities first then the other dorms. That would explain why students requesting “special” dorms have already been given their assignments.

@imagep, I don’t know. My S got into Thornwell the music LLC, but he didn’t find out until Orientation. And they went out of their way in the housing speech to say if you found out early, it might not be correct - however, it could be different for capstone and honors, etc. If you go to freshman orientation prior to July 9th, you find out the overall dorm a coouple hours in - but you do not get your actual room assignment or roommates, just the dorm. I believe all the details will hit by July 9.

I see you D is in the honors program. My D is a “Senior” as of Monday (Class of 2013) and she really wants to be admitted into the Honors College. Her GPA is 3.85, 4.25 17 honors classes, 3 AP lots of ex, leaderships, clubs, part time job, over 100 service hours, Speaks French / Spanish. SAT 1380 /2040. She still has time to bring up her SAT. Any suggestions on how to improve our chances? Also one of the admission counselors mentioned sending her SAT scores now because the offer summer programs for possible honors students. Are you familiar with this? Do you think applying early would help? Congratulations on you daughter acceptance it looks like a great school.

It won’t hurt to send in scores now, but I would retake in fall and try to get higher. It does fall in the middle 50% but last year some people with higher SATs didn’t get in. ECs and other stuff (essays) definitely makes a difference. See if you can look at honors supplement…it is the hardest and longest my Ds did and also serves as application for top scholarships. The honors deadline is, I think, Nov. 15, so you pretty much are applying early…I’m not sure applying super early helps at all with honors but maybe USC acceptance in general. We never did summer programs, but they look interesting. Not sure if they have any impact on honors acceptance. It is great program and hope ya’ll visit over the summer to take a closer look.

Thanks for advice. I agree a higher SAT can only help her chances.
We are visiting in July and can’t wait to see USC:)
We are waiting on one SAT score on Thurs. June 21 keeping my finger
crossed. So, many students are academically talented. Some students whom I thought would easily accepted are denied but I did not see what other qualifications
were on their applications.

There is definitely some subjective elements to selection processes at any school. That’s why responses you get on CC are good but not absolute…as you say, no one really tells you everything that was on app and maybe (for ex) their essays weren’t as strong as they thought. I think it is always best to go to the source, the admissions office, for a honest evalutation of where you stand and what you can improve on. Like I said, there are several essays for honors app…let your personality shine through!

My S received his room assignment and roommates today, also available via the housing link on VIP

D will be a transfer for spring and got assigned housing in Bates West. It wasn’t one of the choices she listed on her housing app. Anyone have info, pros/cons, things we should know about that dorm and what’s good/bad about where it’s located?

Depends on her major. If she is an engineering or science major, it is more to that side of campus. It is on the outer edge of campus, but there is a cafeteria in Bates so food is close by. Bates West is apartment style so she will have a kitchen and living area, but the rooms are shared.

scmom12 - thanks for the info. For a transfer Bates West seems to be the best of both worlds; apartment-style/on-campus, and 3 roommates to help get acquainted with the campus.

Any positives or negatives on Bates West? I know about distance, but it’s nice to be close to the dining hall too.
