Housing at Amherst

How is freshman housing? Are there stereotypes for certain building?

Most of our first year housing is exceedingly luxurious relative to that at a vast majority of other colleges: all first year dorms are clean, beautiful, and spacious. Do you have any questions in particular?

Chuck Pratt is always the most desired dorm, the envied one, the one that is shown on every tour. However, because of it’s vastness and enormity, at times, it can get a little impersonal. Great for the introvert. Cultural events, the Prom, and student-run workshops all take place in Pratt. It houses the Writing Center too, which is one of the college’s most invaluable resources.

James and Stearns are twin dorms that flank a circular courtyard and the Mead Art Museum. They were very recently renovated, and just as beautiful as Charles Pratt, though not as spacious: which is a good thing. That being said, people who live in there tend to form close relationships and bonds with their fellow floormates. All the benefits of the aesthetic beauty of Pratt with more intimacy.

North and South, Appleton and Williston, are twin dorms on the other side of the first year quad, and they are somewhat farther from the center of campus. Some floors from these dorms are reserved for substance-free and single sex housing, and, thus, the guys and gals who live over at those dorms are very tight as well, and arguably more earnest about their academic commitments and personal values.

When registering for first year housing, you’ll be asked to go into detail about preferences, describe personal habits, address any relevant medical concerns, and the coordinators will try to match you up well with a great roommate. Expect one room doubles. Two room doubles are occasional, and the single room is rare.

Hope everything I’ve said has helped!

Thanks, kwu…the info sure helped me.

Do you know anything about Amherst’s crew team? I played basketball in high school but am seriously thinking about going out for crew. Also, any dorm suggestions for someone who wants to balance academics and social (develop new friendships), with an athletic component thrown into the mix? Thanks!

thank you so much!
you are awesome :)

Are there any dorms to stay away from if you are not a party person? I really love getting my sleep so I’m wondering if there are any I should avoid. ;)

Curiosity, you don’t get to choose which dorm you are placed in. You will however fill out a housing questionaire, and they will place you accordingly. If you desire a non-party, quieter atmosphere, you can request a room in a substance free dorm.

Hi GA2012MOM! ;)

As a parent of a kid in the sub-free dorm, I have to say that while there isn’t drinking going on there, I don’t think that dorm is particularly quiet, and they seem to have parties aplenty.

My son has had a bit too much fun there for his own (academic) good!

I second that. The sub-free dorm, at least the first floor, is worst in terms of partying. They don’t drink, but these people don’t sleep either, and they play Rock Band and Guitar Hero at 4 in the morning. They’re very loud, and I personally felt that not drinking and being quiet are two different things.
