So do you have to apply for housing, or is it completely random? And is your roommate random as well, or is there a matching system?

There’s an astoundingly effective matching survey; I’ve heard of only a couple people not getting along with theirs roommates this whole year. Otherwise housing is somewhat random, although I think you can specify a preferred dorm. Jewett is the best =P (followed by Joss)

Does anyone know when we’re meant to fill in the survey/possibly file a house request?

Also, can anyone elaborate on Vassar’s “house personalities?” I’ve heard a few things about different dorms (i.e. Cushing is quirky/hogwarts-esque but is commonly also referred to as Kush town for good reason, Davison is small and family-like, Lathrop is very party-oriented…etc).

Can anyone clarify any of this?

P.S. In regards to my second question, let me just say that I know that I’m enquiring about generalizations and that it’s highly unlikely to come up with a concrete overarching description of like 200 people but I’d, nevertheless, just like to hear about other people’s experiences regarding housing there.

Honestly, the house stereotypes are just not true. They’ve been perpetuated forever, and switch houses occasionally, but they make no sense at all. People aren’t placed in their house based on their personality. Saying, for example, that the “party” dorm is dorm X doesn’t mean ANYTHING. Aside from your architectural and locational preferences, it makes no difference which dorm you are in, it’s the same exact random sample of Vassar students. There are no dorm personalities. It’s a complete fallacy. I promise.

There are only two special circumstances - Strong is all women, and Noyes has a slightly higher concentration of international students (since they tend to prefer to be able to stay in their own rooms over the vacations, and Noyes is the dorm that is open over October, Winter and Spring break).

Wait, so the only dorm that’s open during October/Spring break is Noyes? What about students in other dorms that aren’t going back home for those breaks (such as myself)?

Weasly, you would move into Noyes for the duration of the breaks.

Not quite right…all dorms remain open for Fall/October break. And you don’t necessarily have to move to Noyes during Spring Break. You can also stay in a Terrace Apartment (btw–the new ones have air conditioning!).

Oh, sorry for misleading you, I misread your question; Chii is correct!
