Housing Charges

s just got charged about $40 from housing. I assume this is the damage charge. He has emailed housing to find out what it is exactly. We do not feel that they should have charged us anything as s did not do any damage in the room, he was very careful, and he documented all the previous damages. He also cleaned up the room before he left.

Just wondering if most people get charged anyway or he is one of the unlucky ones.

My daughter’s never had a damage charge, for what it’s worth…3 years in university housing so far.

I got charged $10 for scuffing the wall with my luggage on move-out day.

I cleaned or painted over everything else.

$10 for scuffing the wall? wow! How did you find out? Did they email you about it?

When my s got the room in New/North, it’s in pretty bad shape to start with. However, since s left before roommate did, can’t really be sure the condition of the room. s and roommate had an agreement that the roommate will do a final clean before leaving the room.

PBK mom – good for your daughter!

When I was leaving, I dragged my luggage without realizing it would make a 4 inch scuff mark. The rest of the room was spotless since I cleaned and painted over everything else so it had to be that.

My D & her 3 suitemates were charged $200 APIECE for a burn on the carpet that all say was NOT there when they checked out. She’s contesting. They also charged some additional charges for damage done to the building & pro-rated to all residents (under $5). For S, his 1st year, they did that as well for some damage done by someone on his floor & his 2nd year they were charged a hefty cleaning fee which neither he nor his roommates chose to fight.

Maybe everyone should take pictures (with dates) of the condition of the room before leaving from now on.

HImom, let us know how the contesting go.

Yea, S didn’t take pictures of his apartment again this year & I have no idea of how much they will claim he & his room mate damaged the place. He did take photos when they moved into the place but none when they moved out.

I can’t recall any of these problems when I had a dorm or apartment, back in the day. Wonder if this is a new way they’re all trying to extract more fees. My cousin’s D also said they had problems getting back all of their deposit when they had an apartment at USC & they were VERY neat.
