Housing Co-ops?

Does anyone know any co-op programs to which I can apply (or at least eventually apply in a few months)? I can't seem to find any online resources of them in Berkeley...right when I actually suddenly became interested in them.

Thanks

Cloyne is Suck!

Can anyone tell me their experiences in a co-op? Am I allowed to be antisocial (studying in the room and avoiding unnecessary conversation)? Is cooking necessary? Can I get some slack on chores if midterms are close? (Probably not).

I am not really as lazy as it may seem from my above questions. Just want to know if co-ops are full of freedom or if you guys have experienced controlling b***** as co-op leaders.

One last question: If I want to live in a co-op for the next academic year, do I need to apply for summer 2008? Is is possible to live in a co-op for only the ~9 months in the academic year?

Thanks

No, you don't need to apply for summer, just apply for Fall 2008.

I've never lived in them, so I can't answer any of your other questions.

Does anyone know what the likelihood of getting into a co-op Fall 2008 if I'm just applying now? How late is too late? (I'm a first year).

You'll get into one no worries at this time.

Would it be better to spend freshmen year in a dorm or co-op?

I haven't lived in a co-op (yet since I've applied for next year when I'm a sophomore), but at the moment I live in the dorms. I have to say that they offer pretty valuable experiences. I think it's better to be around people who are freshman too and to start forming friends with them first.

How is the cafeteria food? If you live in the co-op would you still be able to have a meal plan?

I live next to the worst possible DC (Foothill), so I can't say too many good things about it. The other dining halls serve better and a wider variety of food, but they're so darn far. It really depends on where you live. No matter what college dining is limiting, imo. It's pretty much the same thing every week. There's never anything of good quality meaning like steak. And if you're vegetarian or vegan, good luck with that! You'll be in more of a hell since the vegan/veggie variety is nonexistent.

Anyone can have a meal plan at Berkeley. You just pay for points, but I heard at the co-ops, the food in the kitchen is technically yours and free to eat.

Wait with your meal plan are you limited to eating in just one DC or do you just eat at that one because it's closest? Are all these horrible things you said for all of the DC's or just Foothill?

I just eat at Foothill because it's like a minute walk while the other better ones are about 15 minutes away. You can spend your meal points at any campus dining/market you want. Housing at Cal comes along with a good number of meal points.

Maybe it's because I live at Foothill, but the food is pretty bad here. Tonight, for example, was horrible in terms of food. Yes, the other DCs are better. But, nevertheless, I believe it's true that in all colleges, the food is limiting. There is a definite cap on variety. However, there's always off-campus food which is okay.

I wouldn't really say that. I'm vegetarian myself and I've found the food to be fairly good. It's just a college student thing that DC food is viewed as being terrible; it's really not that bad. (I eat primarily at the Foothill DC as well) There are definitely lots of vegetarian options throughout Berkeley off campus.
Some of the non DC CalDining restaurants are quite good. (Romona's and so on)

k_twin: can I have some examples of the types of food you generally eat in campus dining? I'm considering becoming a vegetarian so I want to know if it'll be a major inconvenience in college or if it's easy to find good food that doesn't involve any meat. Do you know if any of the food is organic?

You can see menus here: Cal Dining - Menus - Dining Commons The menus of the Cal Dining restaurants are here: Cal Dining - Campus Restaurants - Location
You can see something about their policies re: organic food here: Cal Dining - Environment - Natural / Organic Foods
If you've already seen these before; then I'll be glad to post something more about the food available.

Thanks, that was really helpful!
