Housing contracts and potluck?

I’ve accepted my housing contract, but have yet to hear back about what dorm I have. I thought you didn’t hear util mid July, but now im hearing others talking about their dorm assignments… Am I missing something?

Also, how bad of an idea is it really to go potluck? Should I start frantically searching for a last minute room mate?..

How long ago did you send in your application before you got your contract?

I’m gonna be honest, up until recently I thought your “housing contract” referred to the actual contract saying where you’re officially living. Now my understanding is the housing contract was just something to accept, no real specifics come with it. My housing page just says that I’ve “accepted my housing contract” and asks me if I’d like to edit my preferences.
What application do you mean?

It is extremely early to be getting actual room assignments. I don’t think the people who are saying they have them are correct. I submitted my housing application and had it accepted October 1st which is pretty early, and I have yet to receive any sort of assignment.

Go here to review the 4 part process: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/housing

Step 1: Apply and pay $50 - this puts your application “in line” and this same line order will be used again if you apply to remain in on-campus housing your second year and beyond.

Note that Step 2 - accepting your housing contract also includes paying $300 advance housing payment. Make sure you did not skip this part or that you qualify for financial aid deferment as noted in the link.

Step 3 - your housing preferences - due July 1.

Step 4 - assignments - emailed mid - July.

@jules888, what you are most likely hearing from others is discussion of their housing preferences. You have plenty of time to find a roommate if you want.

You can use one of the many Facebook pages - Class of . … page, page for your intended major, etc. You can ask teachers or adults in your life that may know students at neighboring high schools that you could be introduced to.

In order to get assigned to your roommate - you both have to specify each other AND you have to order your preferences the same (which you can go in and edit until the deadline of July 1).

Your contract was probably based on the style of room you chose: shared room with community bath, or shared room with suite style bath - and price points that put San J and Duren as the most expensive, and then others at lower price points.

So in finding a roommate if you choose to do so, you are looking for someone who already has that same room style on their contract. If you have a strong preference to get into a certain dorm, and you did not get your initial Step 1 application in early - then your best opportunity to get into your top choice dorm is to find a roommate that DID get his/her application in early. They will assign rooms based on the student with the earlier application date.

@jules888 you asked about going potluck. UT housing will assign a roommate using your age, classification and major to match you with an appropriate student. Housing staff does not have access to information entered into the Roommate Profiler system.

My son has decided to wait until after orientation to do the profiler. He has an early date so the idea is that he might find someone to room with during orientation. If not, the profiler is Plan B.
