Housing Deicisions 2012-2013

OK, my son should/will probably figure this out by himself, but if you have five people sharing one bathroom, are there “other” options if you really need a bathroom and yours is being used? Does McMahon have some “public” bathrooms?

DD says you can pound on the door of a friend and use theirs. People came over to use hers last year.
There is also a bathroom on the second floor in the gym.

This morning we moved D4 into her room at McMahon Hall, Lincoln Center. It was a breeze (perhaps it was less congested because she was there two days early, for Urban Plunge.) The biggest challenge was unloading on crowded 60th Street (demolition going on across the street, lots of trucks wanting to pass, lots of minivans trying to disgorge trunks, suitcases, and bags of linens.)

My daughter is in a triple, in a 2-room, 5-person suite. Perhaps the key to happiness is low expectations-- I thought the suite would be as cramped as the Juilliard dorms a few blocks over, and of the same vintage, but the room, and the shared quarters are by contrast spacious. Lots of light streaming in the 7th floor window (higher floors probably have even more light.) It was quite clean-- including the kitchen (and I have a low ick threshold.)

Quick trip to Bed, Bath, and Beyond up the street. Not at all crowded (it will be crazy, though, this weekend when the Juilliard, Fordham, and Columbia kids arrive in droves.)

Everything seemed very low key and pleasant. Only glitch was that we were given a xeroxed sheet listing garages with discounted parking. We parked in the Lincoln Center lot, which was listed on the sheet, but when we arrived with our stamped ticket we were told they don’t give a Fordham discount. So, if you arrive in a car, choose one of the other lots on the list.

^^^Hope your D is enjoying Urban Plunge and glad to hear everything went smoothly other than the parking. For anyone moving in tomorrow, try Alfred Parking around the corner on W 61st and Amsterdam. It’s $13 to park a car no matter how long you stay and $23 for a minivan or SUV. Best of luck to all!

Do any of you guys know if any students at LC have ever hired cleaning services to help them keep their common areas habitable?

My D moved into Queen’s court yesterday. Everything went smoothly and Fr. McShane’s address was fabulous. The problem that she is having is that her room is on the 3rd floor and it is so hot in there. There are fans in the room but it was still so hot. I was hoping that it would cool down at night but my daughter said that it was so hot that they couldn’t sleep. We live nearby so we know that it is just for a few weeks and then it will be cool at night, but does anyone who has lived there have any suggestions for keeping the room cool? Thanks.

COrrect…oldest building on campus at 1841. But also historic. Yes, it needs adjusting. Fans are what they use. My kid was in queens. She opened the windows often. But it DOES cool down. Its a fabulous dorm. So much fun. Disputatio Competition is a BIG DEAL (faculty panel judges them!) They had late night screaming music dances in the basement…lol…under the pipes. Weekends or Tuesdays only (no classes on wednesdays).

A fair warning. The workload at Fordham is heavy at times. It starts slow for freshmen and speeds up rapidly. Stay away from DRINKERS AND IRRESPONSIBLE and FLAKY PEOPLE. THEY ARE THERE.

My kid picked outstanding friends and students…who are still friends today. They ALL finished Phi Beta Kappa. ALL OF THEM.

The moral: hang with kids who compete in a healthy manner, study together, room together and have the same values.

Good luck.

I lived in Queens 2 years ago and it is hot, especially on the upper floors. Not much you can do. We had a big floor fan and a second smaller fan (we tried to create cross-winds) which helped at bit. There are only a few hot weeks at the start and the end of each semester. I tossed my comforter to the bottom of my bed and just used a top sheet at night those weeks. And it helps to drink a lot of water. But Queens is a great dorm and well worth a few hot weeks.
