Ok, so son will be returning from Study abroad dec 24th and will return to elon for the Winter semester just 8 days later.. He has been trying to work out housing for many months. Every few weeks it was a different scenario but each one fell through for different reasons. He has finally arranged to go in on an apartment which is about a 20 minute walk from campus. It does not come furnished. we live in the northeast.

Any words of wisdom on whether it makes sense to rent a uhaul and bring his own furniture, or rent furniture, or buy used furniture when we get down there?
He is hoping to get into senior housing for the following year and may not need the furniture again.

Hi…we were just discussing this at dinner tonight waayyyy in advance but nevertheless…

Has your son considered buying the furniture second hand of the people who are moving out/going abroad in the Spring? Apparently alot of the Elon kids pass down furniture…

Second choice: there are a bunch of second hand stores nearby…

Lastly, I think that there is an online Elon marketplace where kids sell their stuff…

If you find a rental place, please post…we did that for d1 at a different school and, honestly, it was well worth it…

I think it’s a lot easier to buy furniture at the end of one semester than at the beginning of another. A lot of kids were selling furniture last May before they graduated. I don’t know who would be leaving after Fall semester who would return on Jan 2nd to sell furniture - they’d probably sell it in December.

I don’t know what UHauls cost but if you have furniture that you’re willing to “hand down” to him I would guess that would be a good option. Another option: my D and her roommate bought some furniture that was on big sale last August from Ashley furniture, and Ashley delivered it. There’s also Walmart and Target in town, as you know.

Unfortunately, the nearest Ikea is in Charlotte. :(
