How am I supposed to go about choosing? Does anyone at Columbia or in the know have any advice? Also do you need to get it in as early as possible to stand a good chance of getting your first choices? Just wondering as I don't really have anyone else to ask who knows about the US system.. thanks for any help.

Dining -- least meals, most points. That is the only acceptable choice.

Housing--there are lots of comprehensive posts here. Do a search perhaps. I don't feel like typing out a treatise now, sorry.

No need to send it in early. It all goes into a computer; just send it in on time.

there is a thread titled "Housing" on the Columbia 2011 page...check that out its pretty comprehensive

I actually went for the second-most points and second-least meals, since the dollar-per-meal price was much better at those rates. I used almost all the meals.

but definitely don't get the most or second-most meals, you'll never use them all and will get ****ed off that you don't have any more dining dollars and have to buy them.

i went for the same dining plan as denzera but between both semesters ended up wasting over 60 meals!

make sure you understand that you can only use ur meals TWICE a day (not three times) and that the dining hall has the most retarded hours ever and that it is closed during breaks (usually starting from dinner the thursday before break). Not to mention the food isnt very good at all...they try to make it good but they usually fail. Do some calculations and you'll see that you're probably better off with the fewest meals even if they are a bit more expesnive per meal.

My son got his housing choice in fairly early, but didn't get his first or second choice. He ended up in the LLC (Hartley\Wallach) and likes it.

He went with more points, fewer meals. He is SICK of the cafeteria food by now.

momoffive

yeah. i happen to like the cafeteria food, i think it's good but people get bored of it. most people end up hating it by spring though, that's certainly true.

This might sound liek a dumb question, but what do points earn you? ALl I know is that they carry into the next term ro seomthing, while meals don't.

Yeah..how do points work?

1 point = $1. Your student ID acts like a debit card. You can use your points at any place on campus that sells food. You get your food, and when you pay, you give the checker your ID, and she swipes it, and it debits the price.

...and through some sort of state program, you don't pay sales tax on purchases made with points (aka dining dollars). so you essentially save 8.25% on everything.

Thanks! (10 char)
