Has anyone researched housing yet? From the welcome site all the freshman housing seems a bit, I don't know, pathetic? Haha....ha. Which building do you guys plan on going for? For any current students, do you have any advice/is there a best dorm building?

Based on things I’ve read on here, John Jay (and Furnald, though some people disagree) seem to be pretty good, depending on how much of a social aspect you’re looking for.

Ahhh~ I’m getting mixed responses on which dorms to choose haha. Do freshmen get to choose dorms? Or are we assigned randomly?

I’ve heard it’s assigned randomly… Pray for John Jay, haha.

Housing is not assigned randomly. In the spring you will fill out a housing application where you rank something like 13 options (5 dorms with various single/double combinations) in order of preference.

Rather than considering everyone at once and working things out so that everyone gets more or less what they want, they rank the freshman class randomly and start assigning rooms one by one. As they move down the list they give everyone their highest-ranked pick that is still available. So most freshmen get their first or second choice and then a few get totally screwed. (I heard from someone that this is how it works but I actually don’t know.)

I got my first choice, which was a John Jay single. I absolutely recommend John Jay. We’re directly over the dining hall (being able to go get food in your pajamas and flip-flops in the dead of winter is more important than you can possibly imagine). A single is really helpful if you like getting work done in your own space, and as long as you leave your door open you should have no problem meeting people. It helps that everyone on your floor is in the same situation. If you’re looking for more of a party scene, pick Carman. If you’re looking for quiet, I hear you should go with Furnald.

Thanks a lot! This is really helpful!

Oh my…just came across this while reading cuwiki
[Ruggles murder-suicide - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia](Ruggles murder-suicide - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia)
Ruggles room 509…
Really praying for John Jay now O.o

I heard some statistic being thrown around like 75% get their first choice for housing and 90% get their second. Nice to hear that you can specify singles vs doubles… I will definitely be pushing for JJ or Furnald single.

Here is the best link to learning about Columbia housing’s pros and cons. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-university/276867-housing.html

when i accepted my offer of admission i ticked off some boxes that were basically saying i need to maintain academic rigor and standards blahblahblah… do any of you have exact wordings? LOL i’m scared i missed some important things because I was too excited to absorb information when I ticked them off.

Well I haven’t accepted the offer of admission yet so I could do that right now and get you the wording…do you have to pay the deposit when you accept the offer?

you have to pay 500$ if i remember correctly :)

okay well here are the stipulations:
I understand that my acceptance is contingent upon continued academic and civic achievement commensurate with my performance thus far and upon my graduation from secondary school.

I understand that I must maintain in my curriculum the level of academic rigor with which I applied and receive approval from Columbia for any changes.

To secure my place in the Class of 2016 I will submit a non-refundable deposit and confirm that I am only holding a place at Columbia.

I will withdraw any other applications I have submitted to other colleges

and thats it…Hope this helps!

thanks so much brandnew3773 !!!

haha. No problem LOLSAURUS

LOLSAURUS, I never asked, but where exactly did you get the name LOLSAURUS from? Haha

Oops - I have been on vacation and have not been checking CC

I’m basically really uncreative when it comes to virtual names so I used my grade four maplestory username which was an account made by my cousin. It sounds really juvenile I know but I think I was in too much of a hurry to like, discuss something on a SAT forum to actually think of a name.

I work for Residential Programs (hall director for several buildings) and I’m kind of curious to hear prospective students’ takes on the different residence halls for first-years…we have our thoughts, of course, on what the different halls are like.

Also, don’t forget that the LLC (Hartley and Wallach) are open to first-years, too, although you have to apply for it if you’d like to live there. Wallach is right next door to John Jay, so theoretically you could go to the dining hall in your pajamas in the dead of winter…with a coat thrown over. And Hartley is closer to John Jay than both Furnald and Carman.

I think you answered your own question. The LLC is always incredibly underrated by pre-frosh and freshpeople.
