Housing lottery 2013-2014

One thing people should consider for this upcoming round of apartment selection with regard to the Livingston Apartments is that last year it was a 390 or 420 (after second round) cutoff but this was when seniority did not play a roll. Based on how it was described by housing. All 16 seniority groups will be chosen FIRST. So we can assume the following:

Consider that ANY numbers given to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors are essentially irrelevant to selection to the Livingston Apartments. This effectively increases the range of low numbers drastically. Then consider that the situation where a Senior wants to dorm with a Junior or even lowerclassmen friend.

Also consider that the 2 and 3 person apartments will be harder to get because of this. This is because it requires less and less seniors to get into. Its easier to gather up 1 or 2 seniors together as a group instead of 3. Also considering its much more common for upperclassmen to live off campus.

Just some points to put forward to everyone. Also if you are a senior and worried about getting an apartment. Just find 3 other seniors on roommate gateway or something along those lines. You will be essentially guaranteed an apartment despite your lottery number.

Good points, Housing48. I had not considered this one:

“Also consider that the 2 and 3 person apartments will be harder to get because of this. This is because it requires less and less seniors to get into. Its easier to gather up 1 or 2 seniors together as a group instead of 3.” It really is much easier to get a group of 1 or 2 together, vs 4.

Also, when you are looking for a group because you got a bad number, I advise people to look solo. A lot of people do not want an already formed group of 2. Plus many groups have 1 person drop out for whatever reason and then they need to replace that single. It just makes you more mobile than 2.

I am guessing that many seniors will think it is ok to have 1 or 2 juniors in their groups. Also, people just don’t plan. There are still a good amount of postings coming and going on FB. So last minute people may be forced to take anyone they can get to fill out their group.

Personally, I think the 2 and 3 person Livi selections should be separate and exclusive of each other, along with 4 person selections. Housing keeps encouraging people to apply in multiple ways, but this is going to screw people out of housing when they find out that one of their group mates applied for a 2 or 3 person unit and got it. This will make their 3 or 4 person group ineligible to select -at all- because they will have lost the minimum person requirement. This issue really needs to be revisited.

For Livingston 4 Bedroom Apartments:

Number of 4-Bedroom Apartment Applicants: 3,662
Number of Available Apartments: 233
The final eligible group had 14 Seniority Points and a lowest lottery # of 163.

General Statistics
Number of 3-Bedroom Apartment Applicants: 1082
Number of Available 3-Bedroom Apartments: 25

The final eligible group had 12 Seniority Points and a lowest lottery # of 1106.

So ALL all-senior groups got a quad apartment, regardless of lottery number.

Triples cutoff was much lower but that cutoff will increase when people who applied for triples as a backup select quads.

If anyone knows the doubles info, please post. It is probably similar to triples.

Remember that if you did not qualify in the initial selection process, keep checking your mail in case there are apartments left over.

“We do expect to have apartments leftover towards the end of the selection process. If this happens, more groups may become eligible. Please look for an email during the apartment selection time in case this does happen and your group becomes eligible.”

They will send you an email if you become able to select, but you must then select in the time period specified. For example, here are the initial selection periods:

◦Select a Livingston 3-Bedroom Apartment from 2/22/2013 X:00 PM to 2/23/2013 9:00 AM

◦Select a Livingston 4-Bedroom Apartment from 2/22/2013 X:00 PM to 2/23/2013 12:05 PM

I would expect notifications to come somewhere after this initial selection period has closed so keep checking. Right now they have Livi selection scheduled through Monday. http://ruoncampus.rutgers.edu/files/documents/lotterycalendar.pdf

Resident Knights on that other site said that they were on the 6th round of singles selection. Last singles left were on Livi.

People are complaining that some groups with 16 seniority points did not get into apartments. Wonder what that’s about.

Could somebody rank the following apartments from most to least popular among students?

Rockoff, Easton Ave, Busch apartments, and Newell?

I have a predicament: I’m going to be a senior next year and I applied to be an RA/AA and got one of the worst lottery numbers (10673 or something along those lines) but I applied for apartments with two other seniors and a junior totaling 15 seniority points and our lowest number was in the 2000s. Three out of the 4 of us are applying to be RA/AAs.

We applied for Easton Ave as a first preference considering proximity to college ave, bars, downtown, etc. Also we applied for Livingston as a backup and we ended up getting it…I was a bit shocked since I figured there would be a lower cutoff like last year.

Now our selection time is on Monday, and I’m not sure if I want Easton Ave anymore…parking is WAY more expensive (610.00 annual) and my friend says that the parking deck is sketchy, with cars getting broken into.

The problem is that two of my groupmates waiting to hear back from the RA job would be unable to afford Livingston Apartments if they didn’t get the job. I don’t know what to do! Should I wait for the Easton Ave notification? I hate relying on information I don’t have, since the numbers could be completely different, and I don’t want to be screwed out of decent housing if I don’t get the RA/AA job.

Any advice?

Play safe and go to Livi. Live on campus or commute. Take your pick.

“Could somebody rank the following apartments from most to least popular among students?”

1-Easton
2-Busch
3-Rockoff
4-Newell/Starkey

Newell apartments are on the smaller side, and people just don’t like being on Cook because it’s a bit out of the way from the other campuses. Plus the traffic factor >.>

Ncheer: The difference in Livi 4BR 2BA $8,690 vs Easton $7,922 is $768.

The parking on Livi for a year is ~$200 vs ~600 for Easton. So that saves you $400.

768-400 is $268 net difference.

Remember you can also save money by picking the cheapest meal plan (or no meal plan) and making your own meals.

Cars will get broken into anywhere in the New Brunswick area so lock your doors and don’t leave valuables inside regardless.

btw I think it stinks that housing doesn’t have all RA’s assigned before lottery selection begins.

As per housing on Resident Knights: “If one of your roommates becomes an RA, or is pulled out by an RA, that is ok. If you become eligible to select feel free to do so. We would simply pull that person out of the apartment once we get the RA assignments.”

As per housing on their Resident Knights page:

“The final eligible group for the Livingston 2 bedroom apartments had 8 Seniority Points and a lowest lottery # of 1308. It looks like we had a number of groups choose to not select, so we should have a large second round on Monday for the two and three bedroom apartments.”

btw I think that engineers tend to prefer Busch over Easton, and pharmacy/premed students might like Easton over Busch if they have jobs at the hospital and such. College Ave people would prefer Easton over Busch.

Right now I am guessing that most senior engineers have applied and gotten into Livi, so that will free up space for junior/soph engineers on Busch.

On Busch, Silvers is popular because it was recently renovated.

Rualum: I agree that the money difference isn’t all that bad, plus Livingston has a dishwasher so that’s an added plus. The smallest meal plan of 50 is about $700 a semester. So no meal plan would be saving $1400 which can be used for groceries, but it is good to have a meal plan in case you are too lazy to cook at the time, or the themed meals like King Neptune Knight

I am thinking about choosing Livi since we have the option, unfortunately I’m having difficult convincing my friend to agree with me. The numbers can be so different between Livi and Easton. Her main worry is that she and her friend don’t get the RA job, and their stuck in an apartment they can’t afford (which now dawns on me if finance was a problem why apply for an apartment all together)

Apparently they have picked who is going to be an RA and what not, and are just doing placement. I wish they at least told us that we have the job so we could worry less!

I’m still trying to convince my friend…it’s an endeavor

If you select Livi and your roommate gets another placement as an RA, your Livi selection will not be taken away, they will just assign a new person to the room (or you could probably get someone to take her place).

Did you explain the price difference to her? It’s not that much, and she has all summer to save for it.

btw you do not need a dining plan of any kind to eat at the dining hall. You can pay cash (no tax as a student) or use a friend’s guest swipes  You would not be allowed to purchase takeout without a dining plan, however.

Did you apply for a Livi double or triple, or just a quad? and what were your seniority points and approximate lottery number?

rualum: I’m really trying to get through to her about the price, but it’s not working. I don’t know what to do. My boyfriend will be in the quads next year in a single so if I do get an apartment I’ll rely on his guest swipes =P

We applied for a 4 person bedroom. We have 15 seniority points and our lowest number is in the 2000s. I was honestly extremely surprised when I saw the congratulatory email from housing.

As an AA I opted for Easton Ave as a first choice, then Livi apartments as a second choice. I had a terrible dream I was assigned to Henderson Apartments…I would not be happy there at all, miles away from my classes and from general life.

Ok I see what you mean about the lottery number. 2000s and 15 seniority is no guarantee of anything, and there are less apartments at Easton than Livi (660 student spaces vs >900 available spaces). So you can’t guarantee that you will get into Easton with that number and that seniority.

It seems like you all could live in either building. I would tend to take the guarantee, which is Livi. It’s brand new, and you would each have your own room. Easton is good too, but you can’t be sure that you will get it. I would put it to her that way. What would you do if you got shut out of Easton?

I understand students on a budget but $200-300 does not seem like a deal-breaker to me.

Do you select today?

I think I will tell her that. I hate not having information present, and relying on ambiguity is a recipe for disaster.

We select Monday at 11:30

If you select Monday, there may be time to call housing or residential life (whoever does the RA stuff) and tell them you need to know ASAP before your selection time. Maybe they will let you know one way or the other. You still risk not getting Easton though.
