Housing lottery 2013-2014

2013 - 2014 Lottery Housing Application: Welcome Back! The Housing Lottery Application is now available for the Fall 2013 - Spring 2014 academic year! Continuing students interested in returning to housing for next year should visit the housing application site to submit an application.

*The deadline to apply is January 29 at 11:59PM.

If you are not sure about where you will live next fall, apply anyway. It doesn't commit you to anything and you will have a number if you decide to live on campus.

the absolute worst part of Rutgers…

Actually, I think that registering for classes is the worst part, but this is a (very) close second.

This should be my son’s last housing lottery and if he gets a crappy number this time, he may just commute.

They’re legally forcing all upperclassmen into apartments, while giving lowerclassmen all the great housing options.

Thought Rutgers couldn’t screw me any more than they already have, but apparently I was wrong. Very wrong.

Sixflags they’re not really forcing you, but they are making it easier for older students to get apartments. I think that if there are leftover openings in any apartments, even Rockoff or Newell/Starkey, the sophomores will snatch them up rather than having to live in a dorm, making room for older students to get into suites or doubles if they want them (although I am thinking that suites will be in the shortest supply this year).

As much as I don’t like the housing dept, they do seem to try to make things fair as much as they can. The problem, imo, is that they do not follow up on their “rules”. For ex, it’s great that the lottery is ‘random’ and that everyone has an equal chance, but it’s not really equal.

There are too many students ‘switching’ after assignments are made. So people who don’t plan to live on campus who get a good number, can sell their number, or just do a friend a favor by applying for a space, getting that space with their low number, and then dropping out at the last minute so that a friend with a higher number can get in. I have seen these requests made again and again on Facebook.

Then housing, instead of randomizing that empty space, lets the remaining roommates fill it themselves. This makes the process ripe for cheating. I have seen people ask Rutgers housing dept on FB: our roomie is dropping out, can we pick another person? And housing says “yes”.

Also, when people get the ‘special housing’ assignments (allergies, asthma, whatever) I notice that they are allowed to pull in friends with them. I saw a girl who had special Livi housing advertising for a Livi quad apartment on FB: her other roommates were transferring out so she was inviting others to join her in Livi  Very unfair. She should get other roommates who also require special housing or else people with valid lottery numbers who have gone through the process.

All of the specials leave less room for regular lottery applicants. While I understand the need for special housing, I just don’t think that they should be allowed to pull others in with them.

I understand that some people need special housing but they should limit them to doubles or triples in Livi and assign their roommates randomly. It’s not fair to everyone else who has to depend on a random lottery number to determine their housing fate.

Example of what I mean posted on FB (Accepted: Rutgers Class of 2014) Jan 2 2013:

Jessica Mitchell

Rutgers Business School
Class of 2015

Hey guys! so the deadline for priority housing is January 4th and I have 3 spaces available for the livi apartments bc most of my roommates are transferring so If you’re interested just let me know asap by like today or tomorrow! thanks :)

January 2 at 1:22pm near Colts Neck

So she has some kind of “priority housing” which is fine, but she shouldn’t be allowed to pull people in with her, especially 3 people.

Ok who got a good number?

My son got 2500’s … is that good??

Is he a senior? If he is, I think it’s a decent number for an apartment. Last year, the last apartments went to people in the 2000’s. This year it is senior priority, which changes things.

It is hard to predict this year with the new class level prioritization of apartments, etc.

I would recommend your son form an all-senior group if he really wants an apartment. Last year, they let groups of 4 living on Cook/Douglass get priority for Newell. Only 25 groups applied, and they all got housing in Newell. So theoretically, even if those people had crappy numbers, they got an apartment.

Don’t underestimate the disorganization of people.

Son…" is only a Sophomore next year. His very good friend from highschool got a very low 100’s, so not sure what my son want to do. Do you know anything about off campus
housing??"

No reason to get off-campus housing with a number in the 100s. There will be numbers up to 12k.

As sophomores, they will be prioritized for dorms and suites, so they may want to look at getting together a group of sophomores and applying for a suite.

They might be able to get an apartment, but my guess is that it will be last choice of Newell.

btw apply for everything as it comes available: you never know where the cutoff will be and it hurts when you don’t apply thinking that you will not get into what you want. I know this from experience.

The problem is he is not sure if he will be picked by his friend to live with him, so he is looking for other options .

If your son got a 2500 he will definitely get on campus housing, but no one knows where the cutoffs will be this year with the new system. He will most definitely be able to get a dorm at the very least.

Tell him to keep asking around for groups: many groups break up during this very stressful period and there will be groups looking for singles and doubles to fill their vacancies. Keep in touch with your freshmen year dorm mates as they already know you.

Even if he doubts he will get into a certain category, tell him to apply for it if he wants it. You don’t know where the cutoffs will be for any category.

Thanks for all your help!!! Right now, there is three Sophomores (him and two friends) They will apply and see what they get. When do they send out notifications about housing??

Tell him to make a full group for what is required. Each housing options has its own requirements so read through the web page.

Doubles choose last, so at that point, if he has not gotten an assignment, he will have to choose someone in his group to go with as a double.

hey, i will be a sophomore next year and i got a lottery number in the 300’s. not really sure where to dorm though. i like quiet and i like to study in my room. i know that busch is the campus for more studious students. however, i will have no classes on busch next year because i am a business major. all of my classes will be on livingston and college ave. does anybody know any somewhat quiet area on college ave? i was thinking hardenbergh hall, but i am afraid that it will be a party dorm. i’m not a big partier. does anybody know of a good place for me to dorm?

Considering the entire fiasco around the housing lottery, I’m kind of happy that I commute. One less thing to worry about.

ab8894 as a sophomore with a 300s number you should get your pick of dorms. Make sure your dorm mate will also be a sophomore as they will get priority for suites and doubles.

I am not familiar with most dorms so maybe someone else can help you out with that. I will say that it is an easy commute between Busch and Livi, maybe 5 minutes.

***imo all dorms tend to be loud so you might want to try for a suite assignment as well. In that case you would need to add people to your group.

Needshelp I agree with you.

I think that this year’s process, although meant to be fairer to various years, will be more chaotic because once people realize they are not going to get their first choice of housing, they will also realize that their lottery numbers are secondary to group composition. There will be a lot of time spent on rearranging groups and I don’t think that helps when you are trying to go to classes and study.
