Housing options

First of all the Wall application is out and due in by May 5th.

It looks like the new dorm Zimple/Barbara Greenbaum will be an application based residence/learning community as well. It doesn't state who can apply but based on one of the questions n the application I'm thinking it's not for Freshmen. But then again haven't dorm assignments already been given for next year for the rest of the student body?

The other students have put in their applications/preferences. I don’t know if the assignments themselves are out. I haven’t heard what is going on with Greenbaum either, but right now I am assuming it is not a freshman dorm.

My DS got housing for next year - as a sophomore he will have a suite in Paterson. He will share a bathroom w/3 other students (2 rooms share a bathroom in the middle). He said this is mostly a freshman dorm - is this true? I also read online that the bathrooms are cleaned by the students. I am not happy thinking about 4 boys trying to (and that is giving them a lot of credit) keep a bathroom clean! My DD at a State school had a similar set up one year and housing cleaned the bathrooms 1x month - can’t believe Tulane will not clean this space from Sept to May - not happy about it! Any feedback???

I do believe that for suites the students are completely responsible. Paterson has been a mix of freshmen and sophomores for a while now, not sure about the ratio.

BTW, now confirmed that the new dorm, Greenbaum, is not a freshman dorm.

my son got an e-mail with the applications for Wall and Greenbaum.

Hmmm, because I know several sophomores that are assigned to Greenbaum already. That’s what I was basing my statement on. I wonder if they are doing a freshman section and an upperclass section? OK, I guess we will see.

Maybe. I know a sophomore that is assigned to Wall already too. Will be interesting to see how it all falls out. I was looking at the application for Greenbaum and I wonder if it was sent by inadvertently? It asks about experiences you’ve had on campus. It doesn’t specify that it is not for freshmen though?

That does sound like maybe it is an error. I had heard that it was going to be an upperclassman dorm. I figured they were afraid to have the freshmen that close to The Boot, lol. I guess it will sort itself out.

Email that came to S offered 3options for residential learning community. Greenbaum and Wall dorms were 2 of the choices, both requiring a separate application with essays (8 essays for Greenbaum). My son applied for both. It was, however, not clear what the next step in the process might be. Will they just assign him a room, or after reading the application, come back to him with choices if he is accepted to either or both options? Also wondering about timeframe for hooking up with roommates at orientations next month if you don’t know where you stand regarding the residential community option. Rather uncertain how this all works out…

@vandyeyes‌ - I am trying to remember. Is your S an incoming freshman?

Yes, an incoming freshman he is.
The email he received a couple weeks ago about the residential community options was specifically sent to incoming first years…we were surprised that Greenbaum was even an option.

@vandyeye you said your e-mail offered 3 options? What was the third My son completed the Wall application and thought about the Greenbaum one but in the end decided he wasn’t sure he would want to live in that close proximity to The Boot.

@vandyeyes‌ - Yes, I had heard some people say it was going to be a freshman dorm and others say it was going to be a sophomore dorm. It looks like both camps were right. I know Greenbaum has been offered to some rising sophomores, so I guess it will be mixed. Maybe by wing, maybe not. We will see.

To go to your original questions, I honestly am not sure how the timing is going to work, because it is all changing with more of the dorms being residential college format. I would think that, using the Facebook and Roommate Click tools, he would find other people that applied for those same dorms and focus on seeing which of them seem like a good match. If he finds someone that wants to be his roommate, then they could both let the housing office know. Of course then they have to both get accepted to that residential college dorm. But maybe what will happen is that once Tulane assigns him and everyone else a dorm, all the people assigned to that dorm can exchange info and make decisions to room together. Perhaps you could contact the housing office with your questions and let us know what they say.

My son said he’s having a hard time finding other guys that want to be in Wall. For the most part Sharp and Monroe are the most popular picks among the FB crowd.

I’m trying to remember how it worked for my D last year, which is hard since she wasn’t home at the time. I think she found a roommate first and they both decided to apply to Wall and got in. It seems like she had to accept Wall fairly soon after getting the e-mail she was accepted. When it was time for incoming freshmen to pick their dorms and enter the code for their roommate preference, she and her roommate just had to enter each other’s code just like others who had decided to be roommates but were choosing other dorms. If they don’t have a roommate picked out, they will just be assigned one.

Thanks @cyclonehome that makes sense!

again, thanks @cyclonehome‌
@dolphnivr6…here is the 3rd option as detailed in the email my son received. I would assume your son received the same email:

Thank you, I never saw the e-mail he just told me so I assume he just never considered the 3rd option!

That clarifies things a lot. Thanks to both of you.

The application deadline for Greenbaum has been extended until May 19th. Wonder if they didn’t get enough applications for it?
