Can someone address the housing options, application process and deadlines for housing next year? I have not seen any information on this topic.

I could be mistaken, @Bloomy, but I don’t think I am when I say you won’t see anything unless your child sends it to you. It is all handled directly between the student and the school. They are told to submit their housing preferences by a certain date, usually early April. For sophomores, these are the options:

Rising Sophomores can pull in roommates and suitemates in Irby, Phelps, Mayer, Paterson, Warren, Wall, Weatherhead, Monroe, limited spaces in JL, and limited spaces in Willow and Aron. Rising sophomores must pull in fellow rising sophomores in all of the above rooms/areas.

Now if they know a junior or senior that wants to room with them, the chances of getting into Aron or Willow are better, but the junior/senior has to request them, not the other way around. I also don’t know if they have decided who is going into the new Zimple dorm yet. I imagine they will announce all this relatively soon.

Tulane does it so late - I was just curious about a time frame. At my D’s school, they do housing in the fall for the following year. Thanks FC!

Hi Fallen and Bloomy! Do you know how the system works in terms of who gets to pick first? Does priority go by # credits? Is it a lottery system (best #s pick first)?? I asked DS and he says he thinks that it is random, but that doesn’t seem right. Any insight Fallen?

It’s a lottery system.

Thanks V- do you know when they pick or assigned their lottery numbers? Also, if one person in their group (suite) has the best number (lowest? highest?) can he pull in the rest of the suite-mates?

I am not sure the timing of this whole thing, other than it is around early April. But yes, the lowest (best) number basically gets to pull in a roommate, and I think even suitemates. Not 100% sure about the latter.

Your class status matters, but AP credits don’t count in this particular instance. That is what the information on the website states. So even if your student is elevated to the next level because of AP hours, that will not give them any priority in the lottery.

It seems worth mentioning that for the last 5 years or so at least, I have never heard any complaints about sophomore housing. So however Tulane does it, the students seem to be satisfied. FWIW, my D had a single room in JL her 2nd year, in a funny little area of the building called “The Deep”. Kind of its own little nook of several rooms on each side of a large study lounge. She liked it a lot.
