Housing Preference Q

I just went through the huge hassle of the FSU housing application and I was very surprised to realize that the priority was determined by how soon you submit your online application for housing after you are accepted.

I was able to get a #125 priority but it doesn't make to much of a difference because I don't want to send in the 225$ housing deposit so my priority will be scrapped in like 5 days.

I just want to make sure that UF, as I had been told months ago, relies on when you actually send in your application and not the housing agreement.

I would appreciate any responses/opinions/experiences very much. Many of us were caught off guard with FSU and I definitely don't want that to happen with my #1

It is based on when you apply for housing at UF as is stated, so don't worry. I would send in the $225 to FSU though...you get all but $50 back if you don't go but if you somehow don't get into UF, you will be happy to have your housing spot reserved at FSU.

just to add to this. UF has a two step process.

you submit your application (THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOU A HOUSING PRIORITY NUMBER)

you submit your HOUSING APPLICATION. you should have received something in the mail shortly after you submitted your application. You could also do it on line here https://my.housing.ufl.edu/

if you did this, then you get a receipt from the housing department with the following language:

"Thank you for applying to the Department of Housing at the University of Florida. Your Residence Hall application was received on 07/12/2007 with an application fee payment of $25.00. This nonrefundable application fee is valid for all semesters through Summer A 2009.

Review carefully the information shown below, including name and address, for accuracy. Please report any discrepancies in writing to the Housing Assignments Section at the address below. "

The date in this letter is your housing priority date. In my son's case it is 7/12/2007.

I am sure you did all this already, but in case you just did step 1 above (apply), you need to complete step 2 above to get a housing priority date.

hope this helps.

Vincanity,

I know UF is your #1 and with your stats you should get in, but as seiclan suggested, just in case (if you can), pay the fsu fee if it is your second choice. housing #125 is a really good number, so if you end up going to FSU, you will in all likelihood get your first or second choice dorm for sure.

Good Luck and I hope you get in to UF!

Hey guys thanks for the responses. Honestly, I completely forgot about the housing application I submitted back in the beginning of August.

Also, how does the whole room mate request work?

I know that there will be several people from my school that get in and I am definitely going to want to room with one of them. I assume this is somehow dependent on my/our priority number? Also, how do which halls you prefer add in to this equation??

Thanks again all

seiclan is far better qualified to answer this as she has a d at UF.

I would say that once you are admitted, you then are able to apply for specific dorms. as far as rooming with a friend, i would think that like fsu, they will try to match you up and will use the weaker housing number/date that each of you have.

so if you have an august housing date and your friend has an october one, then i think they might use the october date to prioritize your dorm request.

this is what fsu does.

Ok. My daughter is a sophomore. I have a file with all her old stuff. She was accepted to UF for Fall '06 on January 27th (online decision) and her paper copy came on January 31st (in a regular small business envelope). Her housing priority date was October 12 (back from when she applied to UF). She got an email on Feb. 12th to submit a Residence Hall Agreement (online). In this agreement she had to list what was most important to her, Hall preference or room type (you only get priority for one) and she was able to put down up to two roommate preferences (she put None). My daughter chose her most important preference to be Hall. For her Hall preference (you list three) she put in this order: Broward, Jennings, and Mallory. For her Room type preference (you pick two) she put Double Room then Single room (as opposed to triple). To keep her housing priority date (otherwise they put you to the back of the line) you have to pay $200 deposit by a certain date. She paid this on March 14th (you do not have to pay it any sooner than your assigned paying deadline to keep you priority date). You can access your housing agreement online and CHANGE any of your preferences up until JUNE 1.

FYI- If she had chosen a roommate preference, the school said that they use the later of the two priority dates!!! So pick a roommate who had a good priority date or you lose your spot in line!

On June 24th she got an email saying that she had been assigned to a double room in Broward Hall. It listed her roommates name, home address, email address and phone number and my daughter's new school mailing address. She was in room 267 (2nd floor) of Broward Hall.

Hope this helps.

Seiclan thanks again for all of your vast blue and orange wisdom

The news is somewhat bothersome to me because while my priority date is in the very beginning of August, I know none of my friends applied before October. :(

You could always choose a random roommate vincanity1. Rooming with friends isnt always the best idea and while you may not become best friends with the random roommate you are still meeting new people.

You could try to get all your friends to live the same same residence hall instead of rooming together, if you dont want to lose your priority date. I wound up living right next store to a friend I went to high school with.

My son and his friend decided NOT to room together, although they lived in the same dorm. Son was afraid that rooming together could negatively impact their friendship if they found they got on each others nerves.

Both sons had total strangers as roommates their freshman year, and it worked out. They did not become friends with their roommates, but all seemed to get along fine and had an amicable living arrangement. This year (son's soph year) he is living in a house with two "brothers", but they each have their own room. Both sons are thinking they'd like to live in the fraternity house next year. S realized how nice it is to live right on campus now that he has the hassle of driving in and parking at his fraternity everyday; he figures he might as well live there.

I have had 4 random and 1 friend. Personally, I hate living with my friend b/c of other issues. 3/4 randoms were great to live with.
