I am an OOS student, and I will be attending USC during spring of 2019. I plan to stay in my friend’s apartment temporarily during January and look for housing during that time. Is it hard to find housing for spring semester during January and move in during February? Or will most housing be occupied then. The reason why I want to look for housing during January instead of now is so that I can check out the apartment before I move in.
I’m interested in an answer to this question too.
It is always a challenge but I think the bigger problem is most of the leases are a full 12 month year. The bigger complexes like Gateway and Tuscany will give you a 9 or 10 month lease but you pay considerably more per month. I don’t know how you find a 3-4 month lease…It would be great if you could find a place that students are sub-letting because they are abroad spring semester. Not sure if those are posted on apartments.com, airbnb, etc., kind of sites or where…You may even call the study abroad office and ask if they know of a place/site/listing that students going abroad generally post their openings. Have your friend start asking around.
there’s a FB group within USC for subleases/housing. There have been several posts during the fall for immediate move in or for Spring move in. But, I have a feeling it’s gonna slow down a lot after January.
Ya, housing is a wild ride there. My D signed her lease a month ago for the 2019-2020 school year. Done, thank goodness.
@AndyWarski so are you planning to find housing before January?
@lofty12345 Yeah. It’s been tough, but I found a place that I’m looking at this weekend that’s okay with a smaller deposit to reserve a spot. So many places want first and last months rent but I don’t have any money yet to do that.
So Update…I have a studio that I’m very likely to take over from someone moving to a unit downstairs. I’m looking for a roommate and it’d be $800 a month. The main living area can easily accommodate two people comfortably and already had two people in it when I went to look yesterday. PM me if anyone is interested and I’ll link to the listing on the USC Sub/Leases Housing group.
Was following this thread because S will be a Spring 2020 admit. I know it’s still early, but we’re not entirely clear on the process.
Do Spring admits find their own housing or is dorm housing guaranteed?
@lofty12345 @AndyWarski Did you decide on apartments because you didn’t like your Spring dorm assignments?
@romns116 Housing is guaranteed for freshman spring admits. It is not guaranteed for transfer spring admits (not guaranteed for any transfers). That’s the reason they were looking for their own housing.
Ah I see. Thank you! @CADREAMIN
@romns116 , @CADREAMIN is correct, I hadn’t gotten on campus housing so I had to find off campus housing. It’s a bit more difficult for spring admits. I write for a student ran news org and one of our writers is coming up with a mini guide for off campus housing. I’ll see if I can link it here once it is done.
