Housing? What would you do?

just to clarify-the only place i've heard about there being rats is in Stouffer, and that's back in the days of stouffer's dining hall, long before my time even! take it from jim bean.aka the mouse man. gregory has mice, for sure, and roaches but no rats. and plenty of GAs with cats to borrow to sort out your rodent problem!

lol I hadn't seen a rat problem in stouffer until this morning, ironic. One person a hall down from me was screaming because there was a rat in her room. lol

I live in the Stouffer Annex. Good lord it sucks. Don't choose it. We have terrible facilities and a major mouse problem. Get a high rise room. Or one in Mayer. That is all.

I live in Mayer, also part of Stouffer College House. Simply put, Mayer rooms are amazing (huge and nice), but socially kids tend to mind their own business. Very friendly people, just not the most outgoing. Any questions, feel free to ask.

YEAH FOR CANADIANS AT PENN! There is a whole chunk of us here and I encourage you to get involved with them if you get the chance. :)

is kings court really that bad?

how would you define "social" to back up the quad's number one ranking? i think i'd really like to live there but not if people are partying 24/7. any input?

in response to the quad being social, it is very social in a sense that you will probably not be able to do homework in your room, ever. from when i've been over there, lots of loud music and partying.

I think if you're looking for a social atmosphere, the quad is definitely the place to be. Every time I'm there all the doors are always open and people just walk in freely and chat. The socializing is also the downside though; my friend was really excited to be in the quad but after a few months he moved to the high rises because he couldn't get any work done there.

If you want space though, I think Gregory is awesome. I live in a quad suite in Gregory Class of 25, pretty much the smallest dorm on campus, and my room is a palace compared to those prison cells in the quad. Only thing is, not all of the rooms in the suites are the same size, so get here early on moving day and snatch one of the big rooms. The building is pretty run-down, but I've never had any real pest or rodent problems besides some ants. Socially, Gregory is like a cemetary (great for studying, though), and it's pretty far from everything. I guess it all depends on what your priorities in living are.

I want a semi-social place where I can also study. As long as theres no leaky pipes, pests, bugs, or odors, I think I'd be fine.

Would hill fit that kind of description?

i wouldnt want to live anywhere but the quad... yeah the rooms are miniscule and youre always surrounded by people and cant get any work done...but thats what van pelt is for!! like best place in the world to study and write papers... your dorm is a place to keep your stuff and crash for the night. which is really all you need it for. the most important thing to do at penn is, obviously, party.

how minuscule do you mean?

like 10 feet by 10 feet?

edit: what about the highrises? are there freshmen in there?

bump.. this is a helpful thread.

yes, it is!

on the highrises: do all freshman live on floors together? how does it compare to living in the quad? also, if you are in a single in the quad, do you feel that improves your ability to work somewhat?

I don't think the highrises are organized by class in any way, but I think the chances for getting into them are slim for freshmen. The atmosphere there seems more like a hotel or an apartment building, with people generally keeping to their own rooms, while the quad is more like a traditional dorm atmosphere, with everyone going in and out of rooms. I guess living in a single in the quad would be easier to study in than a double since you have some guaranteed privacy, but the walls aren't that thick. Plus, people will probably be knocking on your door a lot (unless you have no friends or something).

the highrises are not usually organized by floor but there are two floors (of 24) in each high rise that are mostly freshman. They are less social than the quad.Mostly the doors to the suites are closed, etc. It gives you more of an apartment style feel. My best friends live in harnwell and I think that it is not bad at all. The suites are decent and in general I think the quality of living is better in an apartment than in a dorm. The quad is way more social, you'll hardly be able to study in your room. Loud music is always playing somewhere, people yelling down the hall constantly, etc. Most of my friends in the quad have to go study in the library or somewhere like memorial tower. One final note about the high rises, you can throw mad parties in those apartments. My friends and I threw a party a few weeks back and we had about 90 people in the apartment. It was amazing.

A friend of mine says the renovation in the high rises was pretty crappy. Like you can see outlines in the floor where they spraypainted radiator covers, and theres paint on the edge of the rugs....

yeah they only really renovated the outside of the building and the common areas (lobby, rooftop lounge, etc.) the dorms got new furniture and that's it. They aren't that bad though. I like the convenience of having a kitchen and living room. It's also a huge bonus if your floor is social just like harnwell 9 yeaaaaaaaahhh!

I'm a freshmen living in Hill, and I can tell you it's not that bad. In fact, we've all grown to love it here. Yes, the rooms are tiny, but each suite (aka your hall, only called suites because Hill is configured like a big rectangle so there are no clear cut boundaries for where a hall starts/ends... thus the name suite instead) has 2 or 3 large lounges, which are always full of people hanging out or studying. We have a really, really close knit feeling, and you never feel alone or left out.

I won't lie, my first choice was the Quad, but I'm just as happy here. Doors are always open and I have no doubts that of the 37 people in my suite, I'm going to stay good friends with almost all of them for the next few years.

Anyways, since people are always asking to see pictures of dorm rooms, I took some of my room to share with you all. This is a typical Hill double. There's also a few pics of Hill life in the album.

if i had to chose all over I would go for the quad or hill.
