This message from the Facebook site of UF Housing and Residence Education to my question regarding when new admittees start their housing contracts:

The students that have applied for on-campus housing will receive an e-mail today by 5PM with instructions on how to fill out their contracts.

Last year, when my S applied for a housing contract and made his preferences, he was able to change those preferences for several months. Maybe it will be the same this year…you are not locked into the preferences you initially pick.

you guys keep mentioning preferences. I remember last year that we just picked out which rooms we wanted directly on the housing portal, just like the upperclassmen do. have they gone back to assigning rooms based on the three building preferences you pick out? If so, that’s sucks, that is such a better way of picking out rooms then what I had to deal with.

We paid the $25 deposit back in September. After you make your selections, the email says that a charge of $200 will appear in your account activity in 24-48 hours.

Last year, you picked these preferences first: top 3 choices for dorms, which type of dorm (single, double, triple) and if you choose to preference a certain roommate first or is your first preference a certain dorm (you would pick roommate as a first choice if you want to room with someone in particular, dorm as first preference if you don’t have a roommate). Last year my S could change his preferences around all spring when he went in and out of the UF housing portal. Then, UF housing assigns you a date…my son’s was in mid may to pick the exact rooms in the exact hall just like the upperclassman.
Then use this link from Chris R. UF student: [University of Florida Housing Floor Plans](http://www.jupiterlocal.com/uf/buildings/)

Also, if you have someone you want to live with, you will enter their 8 digit UF ID #, I believe when you first fill out the housing contract. So, if you have someone you want to live with, get their UF ID# and you put their name and UF ID down, and they put your UF ID # down when they do their housing contract. When you choose your actual room in May, the person with the earliest housing date between you and the person you want to live with, chooses a room and holds the space for his roommate. The roommate logs on with in 24 hours and confirms that he wants to live with you. My S and his best friend did this for FAll 2010 and now live together and are so happy in Broward hall.

It’s the same for this year (regarding picking your own room). I found it on the myhousing site. It opens in mid May and the date is determined by when your $25 was paid. My son’s was paid 10/1 so he can pick a room on May 25th after 4pm.

If you want a roomate, do you get to pick based on the earlier or later housing date between the two? I turned in the 25$ around the last week of January so I don’t think I’ll get a good room. Did anyone apply around my date last year? If so, what dorms were you able to get? Btw, I’m starting in Summer so what rooms are good in the Summer?

If you want a roommate you get to pick based on the earlier person’s housing date. They choose you first and then you accept within about 24 hours (confirm that you want to live with them in that room # and dorm). I think that you only pick for Fall and Spring 2011/2012. I think last year they assigned you for summer b, you didn’t get to pick, but am not sure if it is the same this year.

You should check maybe they will say which dorms are available for summer b. It changes every year due to which dorms they are refurbishing.

I’ve heard that we get to pick based on the later date of the two roomates from other people on this forum. I just got the e-mail and it says I will have a contract for Summer and one for Fall/Spring.

Also, if I switch to Fall will I get to keep my already-crappy housing date number to pick dorms or will I be lumped even more toward the bottom?

I have a question too about housing…I hope someone can answer it::
What if we want to be matched up with a roommate, like from one of those roommate matching services like roombug? Isn’t UF affiliated with RoomBug; I heard last year UF sent an email with some code or something to use in order to use the application on facebook. If this is true when did they send out the email? I’d rather find a roommate through there then to be randomly matched up with someone…lol. thanks.

If you choose someone that is a friend, or someone from Roombug or a roommate matching service, you will exchange UF ID #s. Then, when you go online in May to choose an actual room in an actual dorm, you pick a room that has 2 spots and you put yourself and your UF ID # and the roommate you chose and their UF ID # (8 digits). Then your roommate goes on within like 24 hours and confirms that they want to live with you and that is it. Last year, in 2010, the person with the earlier housing date time went first and chose the room including the person with the later time. I don’t know if they changed it this year. You can change your preferences for a pretty long time if it is like last year…you can choose dorm as your first preference (over roommate/person) and then if you do find a roommate you can change it to roommate preference first (My housing portal).

i think it might be on myhousing.ufl.edu Or [UF | Department of Housing & Residence Education - Welcome](http://www.housing.ufl.edu/) or just call them at the number on the housing.ufl.edu page. I always found them to be extremely helpful and friendly.
