Housing?

What are the most popular dorms for freshmen? What are the social dorms and which dorms tend to be more quiet?

SOC2015 - Based upon our freshman D’s comments - Burge, Courier and Hillcrest are probably more social than the others. Not saying the other dorms aren’t great, its just that these three are the biggest freshmen dorms on campus and are usually the first dorms preferenced by incoming freshmen. We’ve also heard good things about Reinow, Slater and Daum and there are excellent options for honors housing and in the living/learning communities

There are many parents/students on other U of IA threads who would be able to give you some great input as well. If you are admitted and plan on attending, be sure to preference your dorm choices early as they fill up fast. Good Luck - Go Hawks!

My daughter is a freshman and lives in Burge. That is the MOST social dorm and the one that many freshman want to live in. Stanley is a designated quite dorm. Currier, Hillcrest, and Daum are social but are not as loud as Burge.

My daughter really wanted to live in Burge, however, sometimes you need to be careful of what you wish for. It’s a party dorm and it tends to get very loud Thur-Sun. She has had to step over vomit in the halls and the bathrooms on weekends, and has been awakened by drunken students coming home on a Thursday morning (3 AM). That wouldn’t be a horrible thing if she didn’t have classes on Friday morning. If you’re a serious student, moderate partier, like my daughter, then you might want to consider Currier, which is next to Burge.

UI is predicting another huge freshman class in 2011, get your housing request in now or you might be one of the unfortunate students who will be placed in temporary housing for the first few weeks of school.

lovemykids2 makes excellent obsevations about the too-social paradox. My son lives in Daum, a designated “quiet house” and has a great time with lots of socializing. But they have rules, but official and unwritten, that allow them time and places to study during the week.

Many dorms at Iowa are either quiet house or have Livng Learning Communities which are also quiet house, or have quiet house floors. Do not fear that everyone on these floors is a monk and doesn’t socialize. The reality is that social people find each other, even in quiet house areas.

My son is in an LLC in Burge and likes it a lot. His floor is pretty quiet and he likes the location and having the dining facility right there plus on Sunday evenings, there’s usually a speaker from his major in the dorm with free pizza. He’s not a big partier so didn’t want a wild atmosphere but has found the other guys to be friendly and there’s always someone to play video games with. I think Burge is the most requested freshman hall – get your housing request in soon no matter where you want to live. What are you looking for? We have a friend in the honors program at Daum and he would like a little rowdier atmosphere.

Thanks for the replies! I don’t want a huge party dorm, so Burge won’t be a good fit. I definitely prefer a social dorm, but I want it to also offer some peace and quiet.

What is Hillcrest like? It seems to be the overwhelmingly popular choice on the incoming class’s Facebook page.

My daughter has a few friends in Hillcrest and they seem to like it just fine. The only downside is that it’s across the river from most freshman classes. It’s not a big issue if you don’t mind walking.
