Okay, so I'm going to be attending Berkeley in fall but I have absolutely no idea where to live in the dorms. I live in the Midwest and I don't even know someone who knows someone who went to Berkeley so I have no one to ask about the tendencies/activities of the people that live in certain dorms. Can anyone shed some insight as to what each dorm is like or any suggestions on where I should live?

I asked a friend who currently attends cal (3rd year). When he was living in the dorms, he was in Unit 3, which he said was pretty good. The best part about unit 3 is that it is the closest to campus, meaning that you can go back home between classes. Also, the co-ed dorms seem to be more social. so if you want convenience and a social life, i would also suggest any of the units (1,2,3).
hope this helped (im in the same boat)!!

Based on my visit this weekend, I would suggest unit 1,2,3. They’re pretty much the same.

If you want to walk less, unit 3 would be the best since it’s the nearest to campus. There is also a Cafe (using meal point plan) within the unit.

Unit 1 and 2 are pretty much the same, but their distance is a bit farther from campus than unit 3.

I’m deciding between unit 2 and 3 right now :p!

Locations:

Unit 1: two blocks south of east side of main campus
Unit 2: two blocks south of Unit 1
Unit 3: two blocks south of center / west side of main campus
Unit 4 (Foothill, Bowles, Stern): northeast side of main campus
Unit 5 (Clark Kerr): southeast of main campus, further than Unit 2

Note that the east side is uphill compared to the west side.

Class locations are usually, but not always, where the departments are.

Math and physical science, engineering: northeast
Business: east
Architecture, anthropology, law: southeast
Humanities: south center / west
Biology: west center, northwest
Psychology, natural resources: northwest

The Recreational Sports Facility is on the southwest side of the main campus.

Hey guys, I was looking at Berkeley’s housing website and it says that freshman are only guaranteed housing for 2 years. So what exactly do most people do in their last two years - rent apartments off campus?

Classicalbang, dorm living is so expensive, especially for the little space that you actually get, that it’s rare for people to live in the dorms for more than a year. Some sophomores choose to live in the dorms, but after the first year most students move into apartments off campus.

would bowles be good because i’m a math major?

^mj

Bowles would be good if you prefer an all male dorm.

anyone else have any suggestions?

I’ve also heard good things about the units. Anyone know what would be best for chemE?

^ I liked Unit 1. Less walking than the other two Units, not single-sex and cheaper than Foothill.
