HELP! I'm reaalllly confused about the housing options at Berkeley. Which would be the closest to the sciences building. Is it Unit 3? Also, how do the preferences work? Does it depend on how soon you apply at all? Does anyone have a favorite residence hall?

science buildings? umm go to foothill.

Depends on which science you’re doing, but for most first years you’ll be up in the college of chemistry area, so foothill is closest, but if you want to live in the Units, Unit 1 is closest. Preferences aren’t necessarily given; I was given a room that wasn’t a part of my preferences. I don’t think the date of application matters that much, but just to be safe, apply as soon as you can.

If proximity is your greatest desire
Put Foothill and Bowles/Stern as your top four options (with anything anywhere as your fifth option)

how about an economics major or a poly sci major? are those classes for each respective major grouped closely, or are the two majors varied in their fields?

Hey is housing given in the order that you turn the forms in?
Like do the people that turn housing in earlier have higher chance of getting their 1st choice?

nope. it’s a lotto.

people who apply for Unit 4 (Bowles/Stern/Foothill) and 5 (Clark Kerr) are more likely to get what they apply for.

Basically what happens is that everyone gets assigned a number by lottery. They order your applications by lottery number.

Assuming you did the intelligent thing and put anything anywhere as your fifth option, when they get to your number they look at your first four options. If they can’t meet any of them, they literally just give you some random offering somewhere. They don’t look for other open slots for things similar to what you requested.

Because very few people apply for Unit 4 and 5 relative to how many apply for Units 1-3, the chance of getting into unit 4 or 5 (if you wanted them and applied for them) will be much higher than getting the units (if you wanted them and applied for the units)

This may sound like a stupid question (I just submitted the SIR so can’t login yet), but say I wanted to live in Foothill and applied for Unit 4. If I didn’t get Foothill (touch wood), does this make it more likely that they will put me in Stern? i.e. Do they honour unit choice first and put one wherever within the unit that they can find one a place, so if I did not want a single-sex dorm I should not choose Unit 4 to be safe(r)?

Well you can’t put down Unit 4 Room Type on your application, you can put down Foothill Room Type or Stern Room Type.

If you apply for Foothill and not get it, you won’t be any more likely than any other lottery losers to get Stern.
