Hello,

Does anyone know if applying later for housing, but before May 1st, gives you a lower chance of room type preference (I haven't committed to Penn yet)? Also, how often do students not get their first choices? I would really like to live in a single dorm.

Thanks!

When you apply (before May 1) does not have any bearing on your chances because I think they process everything after that. Not sure how many get their first choices though…(lottery system for determining order in which you’re picked to get a spot). Hope that helps and that everything works out!

Thanks for the reply! Do you by any chance know how the lottery system works? Is it basically a random draw to see who gets their first picks? Also, if I am unable to get a single room, is it possible to switch into one later in the year, or do I have to wait until my sophomore year?

Thanks!

All applications for housing in (submitted) before May 1, 2012 are treated exactly the same! So if you submit today, in a week, in two weeks, etc…all before May 1 are good!

The computer first looks at if you applied to a residential program. If you are accepted, then the computer places you in it, and you are done. If not, then they look at your second choice, third, etc…it’s a big computer program. I wouldn’t get too caught up in the intricacies of it :)

Not sure about the switching into a single.
