I know it’s early, but when is an appropriate time to strt looking or a lease for a house for the 2014-2015 school year?

I’d say sometime in February, since that’s when Housing Day is. Housing Day is when leasing agents from many apartment complexes come to Freeborn Hall and basically try to get freshmen interested in signing a lease with them (some will have prize wheels, where you can win things like “$100 off your security deposit” or “1st month free”–basically, they want to appeal to you. Some apartments, however, don’t start the leasing process until after April.

It depends what you’re looking for. If you want to live close to campus, start looking as soon as possible. I know Sycamore Lane (right next to Trader Joe’s) starts accepting applications in late November, and people will line up at 6 am. Other places won’t even be full when the '14-'15 school year starts, but those are usually places you want to avoid.

Definitely figure out who you’re living with and determine your priorities. Do you want to live close to campus, friends, grocery stores, or downtown? Do amenities matter to you? How much are you willing to pay?

I personally would recommend living as close to campus as possible. I lived in South Davis last year and absolutely hated it. However, other people don’t mind it, so definitely figure out what matters to you.

february is a good time to start

Depends on where and what kind. Apartments close to campus go early, so start checking beginning of winter quarter. Houses don’t even go up for a while… I found mine I think in late May, about 1 mile from campus.
